In the heart of Betul, Madhya Pradesh, where the air is thick with the scent of ripening fruit and the soil holds a deep, resonant warmth, stands a bungalow that seems to have grown directly from the ground. Set within a sprawling 12-acre mango orchard, this retreat by Neelesh Chopda Architecture LLP is built almost entirely around the character of rammed earth; its layered walls changing with the light and, at times, carrying the faintest earthy fragrance. A profound exploration of rammed earth construction and a quiet tribute to the surrounding orchard.
The plan measures 1,800 sq ft and sits along the elevated rear edge of the site. Three bedrooms line up on one side, linked to the living, dining and kitchen spaces by a courtyard passage that keeps conversation at a polite distance from sleep. Social life gathers in a single open volume under a gabled ceiling of reclaimed wood. Rest happens elsewhere, and that is the whole choreography.
"The rammed earth walls respond to the daylight around them, shifting in depth and warmth as the hours pass. At times, they even carry a faint, earthy fragrance"
Neelesh Chopda
