Can tradition and modernity be two sides of the same coin? While architectural conversations often revolve around vernacular, contemporary, tropical and other singular kinds of vocabularies, do the people who inhabit these spaces really identify with them? In Thrissur, Louvred House by i2a Architects Studio explores this question through everyday life, bringing nature and the built form into a unified frame. “The residence demonstrates how architecture can successfully bridge nature and built form, tradition and modernity and intimacy and openness within a contemporary Kerala home,” shares Manuraj C R, Principal Architect at i2a Architects Studio.
The brief? To make room for family life, social gatherings and the mature nutmeg trees already growing on the site. Instead of merely copying classic regional architecture, Louvred House reimagines these traditions for modern life, letting recurring family rituals naturally be a part of every corner.
“The spaces are designed around the family’s literary, artistic and cultural pursuits, reflecting the social and creative life of a contemporary Kerala-based family”
