    Dipped in wondrous aesthetics, founder of Chumbak transforms their home into a melange of colours and contemporary sophistication

    Chumbak—the globally inspired lifestyle brand was born out of its founders Shubhra and Vivek’s love for travel and collecting memorabilia. Much like their bespoke works, co-founder, director—product and design, Shubhra Chadda, remodelled their abode into a home that is equal parts joyous and uplifting. 

    Located in Bangalore’s Indiranagar, the 2,000 sq ft home for the couple is built across two levels that include three bedrooms and a private terrace. They wanted the interiors to be a mix of bold hues and pastel colours infused with modern lines. A mix of boho chic and eclectic, the home is a true representation of Vivek and Shubhra’s escapades put together over the years. 

    The spaces blend seamlessly with one another yet retain unique styles. Wooden flooring is consistent throughout the house and the rooms have an attached balcony overlooking trees. Combining distinctive elements of textures, forms and colours, most of the rooms are calm and minimal while others are flamboyant, vibrant and contemporary. Each space triggers relaxed and calm emotions.

    The living room with a dining area opens up to an extensive balcony which serves as a daily sit out area for the family. Red bricks in the living room impart warm earthiness. The rest of the rooms are minimal with abundant greens and textures.

    A large wall in the living area has been converted into an edge to edge wall of books. “I love the way the gallery wall has come up. The blue armchair and pouf from Chumbak add so much colour to that space and we have kept everything around it neutral giving it the right sort of balance. Definitely the hero space of our house,” adds Shubhra.

    The kitchen in metros and young professional homes caters to not just cooking but also acts as a place to relax. For someone who doesn’t cook, the kitchen is Shubhra’s favourite place to hang out and unwind. It also happens to be the area she loved designing the most. Built from scratch, the kitchen is a serene concoction of white and robin blue hues. Subway tiles have been used here along with Brooklyn wall theme and pinewood accents. Layered with several textures, vibrant crockery, planters and colourful grocery jute bags further add to the aesthetic of the space.

    The primary bedroom is a wash in a grey-green colour palette. Many structural changes have been made to this area that involved demolishing a wall to create a walk-in closet and the dissolution of the powder room and the washroom to make a bigger bath area.

    Adding on to the list of favourite things about their self-designed house, Shubhra reveals, “One thing I absolutely love is the bed covers; it adds the right amount of feminine charm and interest and further complements the wall colour, which helps in bringing out the beauty of the room.”

    Following the footsteps of her parents, Samara their daughter loves to collect curios and original art pieces from galleries across the world. A mix of bold and pastel hues is implemented in the daughter’s bedroom. Mint and dusty pink with a little bit of yellow set the tone right for the largest room in the house that also hosts a workspace area. The guest room is painted in lilac grey colour that mingles with the overall theme of the house.

    With balconies surrounded by trees, there is a lot of cross ventilation in the house. Attributing towards sustainability, the husband-wife duo uses compost bins where they create compost and recycle it to use in their garden. 

    The residence is a symphony of colours, textures and forms. Some rooms are minimal while some are flamboyant and vibrant. But together, they evoke peace and happiness. A home is a place of love and joy that is evident with this abode that is minimal, sophisticated and classy!
