In Wayanad, VSP Architects design Mango Showers, a bucolic hideaway

Can architecture engage in a quieter dialogue with its surroundings, rather than asserting itself? With views of the coffee grounds and a connection to the riverfront, Mango Showers is an idyllic retreat that gently folds into the lush landscapes of coffee, tea, and spice plantations in Wayanad. Designed by VSP Architects and envisioned by Ajith and Kalpana from Thiruvananthapuram, this home feels less like a place and more like a discovery. As the brief initially led to the idea of restoring an existing structure and building a two-bedroom home, it soon evolved into a proposal for a hybrid residence that blends traits of a private home with those of a boutique retreat.

Situated two kilometres away from Kalpetta, the site wraps itself in a balance of rural tranquillity and accessibility to the city. The residence is placed on the highest contour to account for the monsoon river rise. Perched on descending contours, this house overlooks the plantations and a river to the west.

Essence of Kerala

Mango Showers is conceived not only as a private residence but also as a place for social and cultural exchange, spread across 4,500 sq ft. The design weaves together guest suites, a swimming pool and an open amphitheatre, creating an intimate setting for outdoor dining, family gatherings and bonfire nights.

Through a narrow access road, the residence unveils into a tropical courtyard surfaced by laterite stone where heritage-inspired installations — a cart wheel, Theyyam sculpture and stepped stone oil lamp — evoke the essence of Kerala. A hand-painted mural serves as a backdrop flanked by the living and dining spaces for a central Koi pond, anchoring the home’s quiet heart.

Ensuring privacy, daylight and aromatic breeze, the owner and visitor suites are separated by courtyards and private balconies that capture the vistas. Influenced by the natural contours, the central living space opens into a cascading infinity pool, visually synthesising with the river and the coffee plantations. “The design draws from the site’s natural features and Kerala’s vernacular architecture, blending regional aesthetics with modern comfort while optimising views of the coffee plantation and maintaining a safe, seamless connection to the riverfront,” say the lead architects, Vipin Prabhu and Shruthi Bijunath, VSP Architects.

Hues of Bawa

The material palette is an expression of a place that connects architecture to its landscape, climate and cultural practices. The house is floored with Kota stone. Valued for their climatic performance, terracotta tiles and sloping roofs are features of Kerala’s vernacular architecture and craftsmanship. Earthy paint tones, teak and rattan furniture bring textural warmth of the region’s architectural language. Sun-warmed hues blend the rich palette of the outdoors and artisan coffee into the space inside. The tropical landscaping encapsulates the courtyards and transition spaces, nesting an alcove between stone and leaf within the coffee estate.

Rather than imposing a rigid formal identity, architecture should allow the surrounding landscape, climate and atmosphere to inform the experience. In doing so, the built form seems to have always coexisted with its context and appears to have grown from the landscape itself — responsive, immersive and alive. Mango Showers achieves what Geoffrey Bawa always advocated: contemporary architecture that can transcend boundaries to become a living landscape.
