Alpine opulence, Zurich style at The Dolder Grand

Stationed between Zurich’s urban buzz and the stillness of the forest is this uber-luxury hotel

BY

The city of Zurich melts into rolling green hills, scent of polished wood and Alpine air greets you at The Dolder Grand, one of the best luxury hotels in the city for the last 125 years, originally designed by Jacques Gros. Since 1899 the Swiss hospitality has greeted Hollywood icons, art-world elites, royalty, renowned musicians. In fact the Suite 100 here is a tribute to The Rolling Stones, who made the hotel their Swiss retreat while on tour after their much talked about Zurich debut (in 1960s) and record-breaking 2006 concert. The hotel’s original Belle Époque architecture, storybook turrets are balanced by the sleek touches of Foster + Partners. Dali paintings line the halls, Murakami sculptures are spruced throughout and spa terraces bask in panoramic lake views.

And an Easter egg awaits!

Look closely and you might just find The Dolder Grand’s longest-residing guest — the oversized easter egg in the Steinhalle! A tradition since 2009, the 3.5 metres tall floral installation is crafted with 13,000 carnations, crafted in tandem with the latest floral trends each year. This year? The message is pink, bold and bright. Designed by Leonie Haupt and Sofia Castrignanò, the easter egg’s ebullient colour palette is topped by the word FAITH, invoking hope.

Wake up to Zurich’s skyline at the wraparound balcony at your suite, sip a Grand Espresso Martini in the buzzing lobby lounge or sink into the spa’s Japanese inspired experience. The rooms are divided into two: the historic building restored in its original red and ochre hues and the modern wings where stencilled aluminum screens echo the surrounding forest.

Sweat out your toxins at the expansive spa inside The Dolder Grand, where wellness is taken to another level. Japanese-inspired meditation lounges, an infinity-edge hot tub overlooking the city, a snow room that mimics an Alpine winter. For those chasing serious skincare, Margy’s Monte Carlo facials are a must! The Restaurant is led by two-Michelin-starred chef Heiko Nieder who brings a fun twist on Swiss flavours, the Saltz serves up Alpine classics: crispy rösti, lake fish, and free-flowing champagne.  The Canvas Bar & Lounge turns into a swanky party scene by the evening with weekly live music acts and DJ sets, craft cocktails, home-made cakes, tarts and coffee.
