Room for more in Mumbai

A residential lens reframes retail for Gulmohar Lane by MJ Architects

BY

In Mumbai, the rise of textile mills marked an era that defined the city’s industrial and cultural landscape. Expansive compounds were built for efficiency and production. Decades later, as these structures are repurposed, they take on a new role. They now house ways of living that are shaped by the city’s constant momentum. At Mumbai’s Kamala Mills, Gulmohar Lane’s flagship store moves beyond conventional showroom displays, placing furniture within fully realised residential environments. Envisioned by Principal Architect Meenakshi Jessani of MJ Architects, the 4,500 sq ft space weaves together craftsmanship and the poetry of everyday living. The store is imagined as a series of intimate vignettes drawn from familiar home environments. From living rooms to bedrooms and in-between spaces, each setting transitions effortlessly. It invites visitors to imagine their own lives unfolding within these settings.

The design language reflects Gulmohar Lane’s philosophy of “Made in India” luxury. The nuanced hue palette, rich materiality and artisan finishes create a timeless canvas that adapts to evolving collections. Rattan backdrops and Jaipur-sourced cement tiles lend heritage and authenticity. Skylights and an open layout maximise natural light, elevating liveability. Equally integral is the store’s commitment to sustainability. From ethically sourced materials to modular layouts that reduce waste, every element reflects the brand’s ethos of mindful living. The architectural expression preserves the industrial character of Kamala Mills, pairing exposed elements with wooden beams to balance culture and contemporary design. More than a showroom, this flagship is a sensorial journey. Here, furniture is presented within familiar settings to create a distinctly personal retail experience.
