The Carbonado Residence 01, designed by Shiv Dada and Mohit Chawla of 23DC Architects, borrows its name from black diamond—a rare gem that lends its striking characteristics to the house. Inspired by the mineral, the irregular yet refined edges paired with tones of black and grey reflect in the structure’s facade.

Settled in a recently developed locality of Ansal Sushant City in Haryana’s Panipat city, Residence-01 is the first project from 23DC Architects’ Carbonado series. The three-level expansive structure spans across 10,000 sq ft and is crafted to form a bold expression.

“We’ve designed this house for a joint ménage—two brothers and their respective families! The functions are divided as per the levels for both privacy and interaction. We’ve captured a balance between minimalism and comfort, rendering an environment of warmth, calm and content,” share the founders, Dada and Chawla.

While the exterior gesture of the residence is impactful, the interior takes a subtle backseat to exude a sense of tranquil charm. Weaved along clean lines and modernity, the entrance axis is aligned in such a way that it offers a glimpse of all the spaces, right up to the backyard, establishing a visual narrative of integrated spaces.

“We’re glad that the homeowners allowed us to experiment with black shades. Not everyone is comfortable using it within their homes. The black hue has an understated elegance to it that induces a high-end appeal,” say the architects.

Revolving around a central courtyard that is open to the sky and invites natural light, ventilation and alacrity, the home’s ground and first floors comprise of the private spaces, assigned to each family while on the second level, collective spaces are placed for interaction.

Housing an office, three bedrooms, a formal living combined with a dining area, kitchen and an informal living room that overlooks the court, the ground level features seamless floor to ceiling windows that spill the daylight in and offer a dialogue with the outdoor greens. The colour palette is uniform throughout with its subdued tones.

Minimal elements converse with each other through MEIWEI furniture, D’Decor furnishings and Glamora wallpapers. The living rooms, as well as the bedrooms, radiate grandeur, while the kitchen walls are engrossed in a playful composition with nature. Dressed in a material palette that primarily includes matte finished tiles, stone, basalt cobbles, natural veneers and solid teak wood, the residence is bound by a sense of uniformity.

The first level has a more or less similar spatial planning as the ground, with overlooking balconies replacing the extended sit-out decks. However, the upper floor surprises us with its recreational amenities such as—a home theatre, Jacuzzi, gym, terrace deck, a huge outdoor area and servant quarters.

“We wanted to provide quality spaces that made way for recreational moments. In view of which, we crafted this cosy terrace deck that opens into an enormous unwinding outdoor area, trailed through the stone pathway,” reveals Dada. Adding to that Chawla says, “The plot was tucked in a colony wherein neighbouring houses could peek within the site. Our smart planning configuration and addition of breather landscape spaces gave the residence its much-needed privacy.”

The inspiration of this residence gives its facade a striking attribute that’s in stark contrast with its harmonious, muted interiors. The prospect of the client was to explore the expression of architects who could read the surroundings and design a novel and unique abode. Needless to say, the creative duo has certainly excelled in doing so!
