Hyderabad, head here for a drink after work!

Grab a drink, jam to music, or fly solo — Tabula Rasa 2.0 by 23DDS makes space for it all

BY

A sunlit, rust-hued haven for brunch by day — and an electric spot for music gigs (and a stiff cocktail) by night! Perched in Hyderabad’s financial district, Tabula Rasa 2.0 has all the makings of a go-to watering hole post-work. An open-to-sky courtyard, perfect for a never-ending roster of music gigs (or IPL screenings)? Check. An enclosed bar space to escape the din and catch a breath? Check! The 14,770 sq ft restobar by 23 Degrees Design Shift is calibrated to offer a dynamic audio-visual experience for music enthusiasts, yet spatially structured to ensure that those stopping by for a quick dinner or drink leave with their ears unscathed.

By day, the space’s low-lying facade opens up to interrupted sunlight — a welcome change from the vertical offices dotting the skyline a few metres away. Teeming with greenery and exposed brick jack arches, it emulates the perfect dining spot for longer lunch hours or impromptu half days. But by night, the under-nosing lighting flickers on, the amplifier comes alive, and the interiors grow dimmer, groovier and livelier!

Making space for music

The founder, a self-professed music enthusiast, wanted the space to facilitate frequent music gigs and performances. To accommodate this, the circulation was carefully planned around the open-air courtyard in the centre — branching off into a half-open, half-enclosed bar, a verandah, and smaller, more intimate pockets of outdoor seating on either side. Landscaping and lighting add warmth to the main concrete-and-steel structure, creating a cool microclimate within to auto-regulate temperatures when the space gets packed. In the day, the fibreglass roof allows sunlight deep within the interiors, separated by both sliding glazing systems and louvred jute drapes. On hotter days (and nights), an innovative air cooling system powered by an RO plant within the kitchen keeps up to 75% of the seating area chilled.

These structural addenda are designed to minimise maintenance needs and to age gracefully with time. The material and colour palette echo the same philosophy, leaning towards neutrals and organic textures with minimal-to-no processing. Pared back, these details let the sculptural architecture take precedence — an element that stands out with ease come day or night.

A night crawl to remember

Some end their night with dinner and a drink, while others prefer to go out on a high note (with the certainty of a raging hangover the next day)! Whatever your night out on the town may bring, Tabula Rasa makes space for it all. The entrance spotlights this strength from the get-go, opening to a wide variety of indoor, outdoor and transitional spaces within. Slide-open glazing systems within offer one the flexibility to merge one space with the other, ensuring happy hours don’t end in a crowd crush. They also allow you to find your own way through the space, free of any clearly demarcated paths or directions.

A red metal staircase leads to the verandah upstairs, overlooking Hyderabad’s urban landscape. Downstairs, each space flows into the other, allowing you to hopscotch to and fro from the live gig area, the bar, the dining area and any screenings available as you please. Jet-black granite coats the flooring, allowing the acacia wood furniture to stand out unabashedly. The granite swaps hands with lakha red granite in the courtyard, injecting a subtle pop of colour in the restrained palette. This penchant for contrast becomes the space’s go-to for adding visual interest. Case in point, the large wicker panels suspended from the ceiling offer a welcome change from the overarching structure’s penchant for sharp edges and lines.

All in all, Tabula Rasa 2.0’s greatest strength is its flexibility. It allows you to experience the space as you please, to meander through without imposing any strict boundaries or impenetrable walls. It refuses to rely on spatial gimmicks or overt ornamentation, making way for you to come, go and stay as you please. And isn’t that what a good watering hole is all about? A space that lets you be, standing back to let you enjoy the drink, the company — or if you’re flying solo, just the atmosphere itself!
