Where nature takes flight

Through organic forms and handcrafted installations, Oorja shapes Bengaluru’s T2 into something unforgettable

At the crossroads of innovation and a love for crafts stands Oorjaa. A Bengaluru based brand that specialises in lighting that is as creative as it is environmentally conscious. Weaving charm into their work, Oorjaa was a transformative force in the new T2 terminal of Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport. Their garden in the terminal sees a fashioning of immersive lounges, artisanal pillars and installations, no less than an art gallery.

With the intention of placing the liminal space of an airport within the lush folds of a greenscape that honours cultural context, Oorjaa plays with textures that evoke a sense of naturality and designs that nod to a rich history of craftsmanship. Light bells along the terminal feature the Kasuti embroidery of Karnataka, while the striking Musical Tree takes inspiration from the weaver birds of Kodagu Forest.

Using layered techniques, Oorjaa also created a Kabini Partition. Sharing the spirit of the biodiversity within the Kabini water basin, this work of art boasts accents of Channapatna wood, which is hand-turned and dyed, an echo of Karnataka’s toy-making heritage.

With conscious thought behind their work, the careful metamorphosis of the T2 terminal utilises organic tactility. The Gaia pillar is layered in banana fibre paper, balancing structural integrity with an easy lightness, and the impressive parametric dome is constructed through a geometric reimagining of Lantana Camara, an otherwise invasive plant species, but in the hands of Oorjaa, a poetic nod to reclaiming nature to make something beautiful. Through the Nicobar Lounge, Oorjaa translates the language of the namesake islands, resulting in a space awash with oceanic motifs through dancing dolphins, schools of fish and coral formations.

This terminal for Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport comes together through a close collaboration of diverse designers who wanted something internationally resonant while remaining interwoven with the macrocosm of the South Indian setting. Oorjaa skillfully unites nature, technology, history and sustainability, all while narrating an engaging story to those who walk within.
