Set on a hillside in Vila Nova de Gaia, among the port wine lodges, The Yeatman’s address explains much of its character. Facing Porto across the Douro, its terraces turn that locale into its most defining feature: the river lies below, with Ribeira’s closely packed buildings rising towards the cathedral on the opposite bank. The Luís I Bridge connects the two cities. Staying here places the visitor within the wine district, with Porto spread out across the water. Opened in August 2010, The Yeatman was created by The Fladgate Partnership, the company behind Taylor’s, Fonseca and Croft. Its name comes from the Yeatman family, whose involvement in the port trade dates to 1838. That year, Morgan Yeatman entered a partnership with John Fladgate, establishing the firm’s enduring name, Taylor, Fladgate & Yeatman. The hotel brought this commercial inheritance into hospitality, receiving guests beside the cellars where the group’s wines mature.
