Everything about the Malabar spells tranquility, from the idyllic backwaters to the tropical expanses. And encompassing the serene soul of God’s own country is this 5,500 sq ft home in Kerala designed by PATH.
Principal Architect Asadullah Ibrahim says, “The visual language of the space is deeply rooted in creating a sense of warmth and belonging, specifically designed for a seafarer returning home.” Reminiscent of this journey, the tall ceilings and open layout ensure that the family feels the ground under their feet, especially after a journey on treacherous waters. Hues of brown, beige and green characterise the home as being a naturalist’s haven, complete with modern fixtures and quasi contemporary contours.
A naturalist’s mansion
The home opens with a foyer that leads to the formal living space on the left. On the other side, a round window mimicking a ship’s porthole sets the tone. Plush, expansive beige sofas, a contrasting panelled wall and abstract artwork makes up the formal living space. The main living room and dining space are awash in black marble tabletops, beige seating and contemporary chandeliers. Green landscaping was extremely important to the homeowner and the designers have brought this lushness indoors, with two bountiful courtyards.
A tavern of textures, the patios are imbued with granite, metal, wood and jally bricks in earthy, muted tones.
The staircase builds on the spatial dynamic of the space, with its multifunctional orientation as a display shelf. Bypassing the courtyard adjacent to the staircase, one makes their way into the sleek kitchen. The kitchen and pantry space are amassed in brown, with blood orange stools that also double up as accent pieces.
One bedroom is adjacent to the kitchen, whilst the dining space leads up to the other bedroom. Both the rooms are envisioned in shades of brown and bedecked with gold accents.
Patios and pristine pairings
“Another favourite feature is the upper-level patio, which offers a distinctive “upper deck” feel, reminiscent of being on a ship. I’ve infused the area with plenty of greenery, including fast-growing bamboo plants that enhance the sense of tranquility. To create balance amid the lush foliage, I’ve introduced a simple metal bench that contrasts with the greenery, grounding the space beautifully.” reiterates Asadullah.
The colour palette is reminiscent of the outdoors; Subtle depth of warm browns. The assimilating essence of beige. The wood lends a deeper touch to the palette, with a dark ash polish, while the italian marble ensures that it remains refined and sleek. Balanced and bathed in earthy aligns perfectly for this family home that is a sharp contrast from the travailing of everyday life.
