The graceful lines of a building may inspire a flowing gown. The sketches on a moodboard may inspire a design collection. For long, fashion, design and art have been entwined in a captivating tango and a host of new fashion store launches are a testament to their complementary relationship.
From elaborate interiors that fill you with nostalgia for bygone eras to contemporary minimalism that becomes a canvas for the ensembles on display, ELLE DECOR India stitches up a selection of 7 Indian fashion labels that opened their doors to a luxury retail experience. Rest assured, every fashion store is a treat to the eyes and your design sensibilities!
Gazal Gupta, Hyderabad
Gazal Gupta’s flagship fashion store in Hyderabad, Telangana, pays homage to its location in the City of Nizams at every step. Nestled in the Banjara hills, the store houses the brand’s full assembly of couture, including pret and demi-couture collections. The Makrana fountain centrepiece sets the tone for the stately boutique that transitions into open verandahs. It also features statement interiors including inlay floor work, a black and white facade, the signature GG wall colour, antique doors and art pieces.
AMPM, New Delhi
After establishing itself as an elevated clothing brand, AMPM unveiled its first accessories store in Khan Market, the retail heart of New Delhi. Priyanka Modi, Creative Director and Co-founder, AMPM, and Jaisika Jabbal, Founder and Principal Designer, Design Staple, aimed to create a minimalistic space with a focus on materiality. The central display table stands out as a dynamic feature serving many functions — a display feature where each layer opens up to slowly reveal its contents, a space for patrons to sit and have a cup of coffee, and a cash register.
Mishru, Hyderabad, Telangana
Mishru’s flagship fashion store in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, Telangana was an old house retrofitted by Sona Reddy Studio to become an open and airy retail space that is a marble canvas for the clothing items it hosts. Soft, diffused light flows across the circular windows and punctured arches, bathing the space in daylight. On the upper level, single slabs of Banswara marble form a large screen, serving as a facade element that allows light to enter while creating an interesting frame for the greens outside.
Minny Sandhu, Amritsar, Punjab
A fashion store that reflects the yearning for Punjab’s undivided era, Minny Sandhu’s clothing retail space crafted by Udaai Batra and Navneet Kaur, Principal Designers at the design studio Bora Da, allows one to immerse themselves in a historic trip down memory lane. Reminiscent of the old havelis of Punjab in each texture and colour, the store located on Ranjit Avenue in Amritsar features mosaic patterned tiles, rustic walls and soft yellow lighting. An open room with arches on all sides defines the space. With architecture both historical and contemporary, the Minny Sandhu store invokes the bygone era while remaining rooted in the present.
Raslila, Pune, Maharashtra
A boutique studio designed by Kefi Studio and located in the neighbourhood of Aundh, Pune, Raslila is inspired by spatial design and the concept of self-reflection. White walls and gold racks allow the products to take centre stage. The monotony is broken by a myriad of textures including fluted panels and tonal surfaces in pastel pink reflected in the mirrors in gold accents that dominate the interior walls. Contemporary furniture with gold accent pieces holds the promise of a luxury shopping experience.
Vinay Vastralay, Surat, Gujarat
A business passed down from one generation to the next, Vinay Vastralay’s retail space is a testament to its long legacy. An amalgamation of craftsmanship rooted in vernacular traditions and the clarity of modern spaces, the single-storied 900 sq ft structure in Surat is designed by Boney Keriwala and Alak Parmar, Principal Founders, The B.A.D. Studio, to be an inviting, comfortable and personalised shopping experience. The space is versatile and can be customised to host exhibitions and fashion events.
The Textile Studio, Kolkata, West Bengal
A collaborative effort by About the Space from Pune and Spazio Interiors from Kolkata led to the creation of The Textile Studio. Located in Kolkata, the space celebrates the essence of textiles while offering a serene and visually appealing experience. Shades of white and ivory dominate the walls, creating a backdrop that accentuates the vibrant and diverse fabrics on display. Archways and niches add a touch of fluidity amidst minimalistic interiors and guide the visitors across the space. Sunlight filters in through large windows that frame a picturesque water body, promising a tranquil experience of textile appreciation.
