Curves and contours! This Gujarat home by Vani Bhutani Designs embraces soft edges to look sharp

The living room has curved steps in the ceiling that connect the living room, dining area, and the kitchen. The moon artwork has been sourced from Shri Rama Art Gallery. Pebble-shaped sofas with dome lights stand in the centre of the room sourced from local vendors. The two chairs in shades of green have been sourced locally too. A house doesn’t need straight lines and refined edges to look ‘sharp’. Blunt lines are just as perfect! Loving curves just as they are, Vani Naik Bhutani of Vani Bhutani Designs crafts this monochromatic den in Surat, Gujarat

“The homeowners are a simple family. They wanted a house that reflected their personality and lifestyle,” reveals Vani. As uncomplicated as this brief seems, it was just as challenging. The designer decides to embrace the imperfection of curved lines in this 2,800 sq ft abode, adopting a Wabi-Sabi theme that revolves around loving the beauty of the flawed.

Running around in circles

The entrance secludes itself from the home, creating its own space with a dark green glass hanging partition. Shapes and patterns with rounded edges contrast the beautiful herringbone pattern in the foyer. As you slide towards the living room, you notice a uniformity in the theme.

The kitchen uses monochromatic dekton tiles. A smeg ceiling mounted chimney covers the ceiling curves as a cane sandwich glass stands in a round pivot window. A set of patterned cane and metal bar stools sit by the kitchen island; Photography by Noaidwin Sttudio

A formal living area trickles into an informal one with less seating. The soft-edge furniture seems to glide against the curved embellishments of the beige walls. Plush, pebble-shaped couches push against each other, almost as if doing the wave. The designer adds a soft touch to the decor with rounded pottery, bespoke hanging lights and ornamental designs on the walls.

The kitchen and dining room blend into one. While a collage of paintings with black and white designs takes over the walls, specks of colour slowly seem to invade the spotless white dekton tiles in the room. The kitchen uses a smeg ceiling mounted chimney and a cane sandwich glass that connects it to the utility area.

Comforting colours

Vani crafts the home with a platinum grey Italian marble with a beige tone. The herringbone pattern and off-white kalinga terrazzo stone highlights the subtle designs in the home that peek from the uniform colour. Lime concrete graces the walls.

Every bedroom has a colour theme to break the monotony of the white in the common rooms. While the master bedroom dips in blues, the daughter’s bedroom adopts pink, the parent’s use natural brown and the son’s room has green. Although different in colour, the bedrooms bond over their love for bespoke furniture with wavy lines.

Perfect imperfections

Every home has a comfort room that everyone fights over. For this home, it’s the multipurpose room that gazes at sunset every evening through a tall window. Its connection to the common area facilitates easy access through sliding and folding cane glass doors, walls, and ceilings decorated with fascinating patterns.
