Go behind the scenes with Kangana Ranaut and Shabnam Gupta

JUN 8, 2020 | By Anamika Butalia

On a cool Mumbai winter morning, the entire team is working on a production plan that’s been discussed, adjusted and aligned for over three weeks. After a quick debrief around 12 noon, we go five minutes away to Kangana Ranaut’s home, where she is to choose ensembles for the shoot at her European styled studio, conceptualised by interior designer extraordinaire Shabnam Gupta, in Mumbai’s Bandra suburb.

We’ve been told she’s put on some weight for her role in the upcoming Jayalalitha biopic Thalaivi but when we come face to face with her, it doesn’t even show! She’s still barely a size S. “That’s because I’m 5’7” and the extra kilos have gotten equally distributed,” we overhear Kangana share with Shabnam. Her height certainly gives her an enviable stature.

Less than 20 minutes later, having left her to get done up in peace at her home, we’re back at the two-storeyed studio of Manikarnika Films in Pali Hill, Bandra. We walk through a wicket in a green gate and a capacious space opens up—this is an alfresco cafe-style setup, complete with a Smeg coffee machine.

After a quick bite, we step upstairs just as Kangana arrives a little over an hour later, ready for the first shot. It’s all set up on the first floor, against the red-coloured editing studio.
