Mumbai is known for possessing a multitude of cultures, but fleeting moments of being able to take it in. This 1,580 sq ft home designed by Twisha Thakker Design Studio likes to differ however. A contemporary interpretation of Vrindavan, here every design decision extends culture to its homeowners with a meticulous presence of comfort.
Traditional artwork. An ornate mandir. And yet, not without the elegance and refined palette that a family of three would want to relax in after a long day. Twisha Thakker, principal interior designer of her eponymous firm, juxtaposes subtle with spiritual to create a space befitting the family. The home is simple but satiates one’s vision completely.
Indulge in earthy
Open spaces are few and far in the city. So the homeowners wanted their home to feel like one. Walking in, one is greeted by high ceilings and a grand foyer percolated with light. The earthy tones present throughout the home begin right from the deep green dual-purpose shoe cabinet and bench and textured wall.
The living space speaks of serene evenings spent with family. Grey tones on the most plush seating and a warm wooden centre table bring the space together. The rattan swing in the living room was a special request from the owner’s and we have no qualms. It adds a sense of flow to the cosy and refined atmosphere.
Marble exudes a sense of stability, a feeling of being rooted. And what better place to have it be the focal point than the dining area? The marble-top dining table against the Krishna artwork on the textured walls guarantees the mood for a warm, comforting meal. The kitchen and utility area continue the clean and comforting story of the home, keeping functionality at the top.
“My favourite corner of House Nandini is undoubtedly the Mandir. Designing this space required thoughtful planning to perfectly align with my client’s vision, creating an altar that is both highly functional and aesthetically captivating. The sliding, folding doors feature champagne-finished profiles with embedded brass bells,” says Twisha and we wholly agree.
The son’s bedroom emphasis pops of colour and textured furnishings to represent the ferocity of the youth, while the master bedroom embraces a certain sense of luxury and reverie. Earthy indulgence is found in the rich veneers, cane sandwiched wardrobe shutters and plush textiles. The guest room also doubles up as a perfect working space, with an expansive wooden desk and a cosy reading nook.
From culture to texture…
One doesn’t expect a home on the 40th floor in Mulund to bring forward serenity, spirituality and space (lots of space). Astoundingly, the combination of grainy textures, warm wood veneers and basal tones layered and lit up by natural light, provide a sense of tranquility and eternal esther to the space.
Multiple Krishna paintings and regal artisanal touches let the muted tones come to fruition. “ The visual language incorporates clean, contemporary lines and minimalist design sensibilities. This balance between modern and natural elements results in a refined, thoughtfully curated atmosphere,” says Twisha whose main approach with the home was to create comfort entrenched in culture.
