Grounding a home in green

A Bengaluru home by The Purple Ink Studio blends in with a dash of drama

BY

Despite being located in a cosmopolitan city, this home, named Villa 1374, is contrived to feel spatially and visually fluid, as if breathing in its surroundings, while its interiors juggle with ease a sense of cosy drama. Tasked with building a 15,800 sq ft home in Bangalore, nestled between time-worn trees, required The Purple Ink Studio to take into consideration the many plants of the owners and those existing on the plot.

“Much of the landscape design was inspired by the client’s own collection of native flowering plants, relocated from their previous home. This added not just ecological relevance, but a layer of memory and emotional resonance,” shares the studio. Throughout the home, pockets of green trickle inside and out, between curving ceilings and pops of colour, while the architecture itself wraps and unwraps around nature.

The materiality of it all

All along the dining and formal living room, extending out to the deck, is a roof of warm panelled wood, while the bedrooms boast patterned lacquer wood flooring. Ensuring a sense of organic flow runs along the daily activities of the house. An entertaining deck features an earthy unfinished ceiling, and the dining hosts a wall of white marble anchored above and below by wood, balancing comfort and the contemporary. While the exterior facade of the home curves around, wearing alternating coats of concrete and wood cladding. Lending this multistorey building a rawness of natural materials.

Bending to nature’s will

The meandering river, the rolling dune arcs, the twisting tree roots and the form of this home all share a defining design element: curvature. Beginning even before you enter, from the outward structure and snaking throughout the home, we see curves within ceiling boundaries, the flow of the marble walls, and colourful, rounded statement furniture pieces. Soft outlines that allow a seamless integration into this home, the whole is a sum of its parts, allowing every element to shine and blend in equally well.

To each their own

However inspired the home may be, it also makes space for bursts of personality to pepper through, especially in the children’s room, which is replete with colour and bold designs. While dining chairs of maroon, a dark blue bed set on lacquered wood flooring, a triple-height garden court and a rug of red and white checks surrounded by blue couches in the entertainment room, all speak to the eclectic touches that make this house a home. A custom, rounded mirror held above patterned black and white tile dramatises the powder room.

Working in harmony with nature rather than against it, this three-tier bungalow with glamorously eclectic interiors is a masterclass in thoughtful design catering to both flora and the family within.
