Escape to Villa San Michele, where luxury meets history in Florence

BY

Florence is nothing if not beautiful, but Stendhal syndrome is real — with so much art, history and culture packed into its city centre even the most seasoned travellers can find themselves overwhelmed. That’s where Villa San Michele, A Belmond Hotel comes in. Nestled in the hills of Fiesole just a short scenic drive from the heart of Florence, this former 15th-century monastery is the ultimate retreat.

Michelangelo, monks and a dash of Napoleon

Villa San Michele is steeped in history. It was originally a 15th-century monastery for Franciscan friars and its Renaissance façade is said to have been designed by none other than Michelangelo. Over the centuries it has played host to notable figures including the Davanzati family and Napoleon Bonaparte. Much of the monastic architecture remains from massive metal-bolted wooden doors to stone archways sized for 15th-century stature. But a continual process of renovation has transformed it into a luxurious yet intimate escape with brighter more colorful interiors that blend history with modern elegance.

Rooms that feel like a Tuscan dream

With just 46 rooms and suites, Villa San Michele does its best to keep things intimate. A hint of monastic simplicity remains but first-rate comforts ensure a lavish stay. The bathrooms in particular are a treat to the eyes — spacious, stylish and designed for indulgence. Step outside your window and Florence sprawls beneath you — a view so breathtaking it’s almost surreal.

Culinary art

Dining at Villa San Michele is an experience that blends the past with the present. The La Loggia Restaurant serves Tuscan cuisine with a palate pleasing twist allowing guests to savour flavours while soaking in panoramic views of Florence. The Cloister Bar within the ancient monastery’s cloisters offers a unique ambiance for evening cocktails. Not in the mood for a full sit-down meal? No worries — just grab a cocktail and some Tuscan bites at the pool bar while soaking up that golden Italian sun.

Taking in Florence, one step at a time

Florence is basically an open-air museum where every turn leads to another jaw-dropping landmark. Piazza del Duomo is the city’s heart crowned by Brunelleschi’s Dome, an architectural marvel that never fails to amaze. Just a short stroll away Piazza della Signoria is where history and politics collide, with the imposing Palazzo Vecchio standing guard. And then there’s Santa Croce, a stunning basilica that’s not just beautiful — it’s also the final resting place of legends like Michelangelo and Galileo. No wonder Florence was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site — this city is pure magic.
