Making a multigenerational home

Neha Garg crafts a silk-draped space where modern neutrals take the centre stage

BY

As soft filters of daylight spill across the many corners of this multigenerational abode in Raipur, a conscious canvas of minimalism begins to define the interiors. Dubbed Silk Route and helmed by Studio Jane Designs, the home is modern as it is meditative; it is private as it is equally perfect for convivial gatherings, too.

“Not wanting to align with trends, the family wanted a home that would feel contemporary and timeless for years down the line” – Neha Garg

Uncluttered, clean lines, effortlessly connected spaces, neutral yet stylish colours and sleek furniture pieces — begin to narrate the story of this home.

Look keenly at the art here too and you’ll notice how effortlessly it becomes one with the interiors, “The artwork is not an afterthought but an extension of the design narrative, bringing subtle dimension, texture, and personality to each area while remaining true to the minimalist ideal,” says Neha.

Traversing the Silk Route

True to its name, silk cascading off the walls arrests your attention as you step in. The living room visually connects to the dining area and the kitchen — creating a convivial environment for the family. The two are parted by a delicate glass divider, facilitating openness while maintaining individual functionality. A subtle light installation defines the dining area, embodying the home’s warmth.

Indoors, the home follows the same language of serenity. The bedrooms, though designed to account for personality, still carry the overarching palette. Taking a detour from the conventional colours you may usually associate with kids’ bedrooms, Studio Jane chooses to cover the walls with beige and grey. An east facing French panel window, spanning impressive 40 ft, floods the guest bedroom, filling the room with daylight and warmth, not to mention creating the perfect golden hour mise-en-scene!

Moodboard to execution

Whilst minimalist design appears simple, balancing earthy and cream tones throughout the home without repetition needs a dextrous eye for design and Neha proves it, using a chromatic palette of white, beige, brown and black alongside textural elements to break the monotony. The natural marble tops and flooring are complemented by matte gold accents while the mirror and glass in the dividers amplify light and spatial fluidity.

Designer’s predicament

“One of the primary challenges was to balance the various needs of multiple generations under one roof. Designing social zones while maintaining private sanctuaries necessitated careful spatial planning and zoning,” illustrates the Founder & Principal Designer.

The open prayer space serves as a focal point in the living area, making this Neha’s favourite design feature alongside the kids’ room…
