Describing the 4,500 sq ft duplex in Mumbai that took shape after merging two bare shell apartments in Lodha World View, Deshna Kasliwal of her eponymous firm reveals, “This 4-bedroom home had to be designed as one, where their grandkids could run around without having to worry about bumping into the next valuable item or a sharp corner. The family’s old residence was a duplex as well and they wanted to continue a similar lifestyle.”
Staying true to a theme that celebrates Indian heritage and craftsmanship, reimagined for the modern age, every nook of the den dubbed VaayuVilas exemplifies an architectural sensibility that celebrates interconnectedness, creating an interplay of openness and mystery.
“Drawing inspiration from the traditional Indian game of Luka Chhupi (Hide and Seek), the design creates an interplay of openness and mystery. Spaces gradually reveal themselves, offering glimpses that entice you to explore further.”

Strong undercurrents of Indian craftsmanship visibly shines throughout the home, through striking design elements like jharoka, a reclaimed block print stencil, and diwan seatings.
Of spatial fluidity
“In order to join both spaces, we made a 100 sq ft core cut in the slab and added a staircase to make it one duplex,” says the Principal Designer of Deshna Kasliwal Design Studio. “From the technical knowhows of actually going about a 100 sq ft cutout, to supporting the structure and concealing additional beams, to conceptualising the built staircase, it was a learning for us. After weeks of brainstorming, we were able to pull off a beautiful staircase, which is the highlight of the space.”
Championing local artistry
Eschewing a common notion that perceives opulence as excessive, the duplex integrates reclaimed materials like a historic block print stencil for the bar front and a repurposed wood bench in the powder room, blending sustainability with local artistry.
“The use of local materials like Nijarna marble, Jaisalmer stone, and Baroda green marble further grounds the design in India’s artisanal heritage, offering a refreshing take on eco-conscious indulgence,” reveals Deshna about this duplex where desi craftsmanship takes the spotlight, wrapped in a design sensibility that espouses familiarity with a futuristic appeal.
