“I have designed the house to look and feel like our personal art gallery that merges with our day-to-day life but also brings out our personality,” reveals Nidhi Vaish of Yellow Brick Road Design, about designing her own home in Bengaluru that glimmers with a distinct wabi sabi style.

With a massive 6,000 sq ft area, the home brims with a soft yet vivid energy, set within Total Environment’s project dubbed Windmills of Your Mind.

Minimal aesthetics

The highlight of this home is the amalgamation of the kitchen and living area, intentionally designed to foster a sense of interaction and familial bonding. The resultant vast expanse of fluid space, bathed in natural light from the floor-to-ceiling windows and adorned with custom-designed sofas and a centre table of beaten-brass sheets, spells sophistication, yet establishes an ambience of calm.

The ground floor includes the hallway, leading to the expansive living room and kitchen as well as the Master bedroom, while the upper floor, features a family room, guest bedroom and a study.

Colours

The use of a nature-inspired colour palette mainly ocean and beach tones adroitly encompassing the entire home – walls, furniture and upholstery, accentuates the peaceful aura of this abode.

Strong geometric forms in the art, furniture, carpet, lights and landscape, following a colour and material palette, customised for each space based on functionality, further heighten the overall leitmotif of tranquillity. These are well-balanced through apt soft furnishings and lights. “The table, artwork on the wall, and the angular carpet all derive from the same design language and bring the whole space together beautifully,” explains Nidhi.

Communal Hub

The kitchen extends onto a covered outdoor deck with a Jhoola and an al fresco dining setup curated with natural materials. The 10 ft long marble island counter in the open kitchen is the pièce de résistance and along with the dining table and outdoor dining area, serves as a family hub where members gather to cook, eat, converse over a cup of chai and spend leisure time.

Dressed in an elegant palette with unified aesthetics and Wabi-Sabi touches resulting from a meticulous use of bespoke Indian crafts and materials, this serene habitat exudes warmth and a welcoming vibe.

“It all had to come together as a coherent whole to bring in that desired sense of peace and calm, which I have managed to achieve,” sums up Nidhi.
