Between a retreat and an art gallery in Kolkata

This Kolkata home, designed by Amit and Preeti Porwal, is an abstract artist’s mood board

A home that reads like a mosaic of its owners’ aesthetics, this 4,000 sq ft residence in Kolkata, dubbed Vilasya, is designed by Amit and Preeti Porwal, Founders, Icon Projects Inspace Pvt. Ltd. (IPIPL). It unfurls like a series of boutique-styled vignettes. Each nook speaks a distinct design language: walk-in wardrobes straight out of mood boards, spa-like bathrooms that echo private wellness retreats and sculptural pieces emerging from a canvas of opulent neutrals. Warm lighting softens the edges, wrapping the home in a luxury befitting its bougie high-rise address. While its composed palette and curated artworks may, at first glance, suggest a touch-me-not gallery, the home quickly reveals its more convivial side by being equally at ease hosting an intimate soirée or a full-blown rager.

ELEGANCE AND INTRIGUE

At the heart of the design lies a language of thoughtful layering. Earthy browns and beiges form the base, while a rhythmic sequence of arches carries the eye from the living room into adjoining spaces, lending continuity and flow. The dining area, in particular, channels the mood of a refined restaurant. An oval marble table anchors the room, catching the changing light as it shifts from bright afternoons to mellow sundowners, with the cityscape unfolding in the background. There’s a cinematic quality to the experience where every moment feels staged, as though lifted from the set of a larger-than-life film. In the private quarters, golden accents take the lead in the master suite. A cushioned headboard, warm upholstery and a plush carpet underfoot come together to create a space that feels both indulgent and intimate. An artsy lounge corner invites respite, while the expansive walk-in wardrobe turns everyday into something performative. The adjoining bath continues this narrative, with wood and gold accents conjuring a resort-like adulation.

KNITTING MATERIALS AND SPATIAL TRANSITIONS

Even functional elements blur into art, such as the abstract wall-mounted shelf beside the television console, which reads as a sculptural installation in the master suite. The remaining bedrooms echo the home’s overarching aesthetic, each interpreted in its own font. The daughters’ rooms lean into a more exuberant palette, while the grandparents’ suite adopts a quieter sensibility. This interplay of personalities underscores the home’s multi-generational ethos, where grandeur intertwines with warmth, and design becomes a shared language. Textures converse, colours shift, and the architects’ vision materialises into Vilasya, the Sanskrit word for being charming and delightful.
