A sanctuary of collectors in Bengaluru

This home by BASICS Studio admires art and architecture in equal measures

What comes to mind when one thinks of solace? Walking in pristine holds of nature, rereading that one book over again, spending moments of soul-searching or simply immersing in art. It is serendipitous how our personal ways of life and leisure can evoke a spectrum of emotions. Tucked away in Bengaluru, a home by BASICS Studio captures this sentiment with art, material richness and artisanal finishes at its core.

The other significant question the home poses is what becomes of it when the family makes art the protagonist in every corner. “The idea of the home as a canvas for art and collectables drives the narrative with thoughtful integrations of heritage elements within a refined, modern framework,” says Khushboo Kakkar, Founder and Principal Architect of her design studio.

Art in architecture

Set within a capacious 3,570 sq ft envelope, the home was originally configured as a four-bedroom layout before being assembled into a three-bedroom residence. For owners who are true art connoisseurs, a home could never be envisioned as merely functional; it has to possess grandeur, where artistry is not just displayed but is attuned within the space.

While the dining and living areas model natural habitats for social gatherings, an undercurrent of personal sensibility runs throughout, thanks to the meticulously placed murals and artworks. The dichotomy between heritage and modernity comes into focus with antique wooden pillars standing guard and framing the dining room with splendour. Their aged patina contrasts beautifully against a gold foil ceiling, reflecting an ethereal glow around. The juxtaposition is deliberate; an interplay of antiquity and new-age living that anchors the residence to the co-existing ideas of past and present.

The cadence of living

The living and dining areas also serve as the core of the home. Their openness extends a sense of conviviality, while the layering of materials and textures like timber, brick-lined ceilings ensures permanent warmth. Adjacent to these shared spaces is a thoughtfully designed study-library, resting as a tranquil retreat for reading and working. Quieter in its rhythm, the space thrives on balance.

Private spaces continue the ethos of understated luxury, where the master suite, with its open layout, promises spaciousness and calm, while the guest and secondary bedrooms maintain a serene ambience. The materiality here is deeply intentional, too. Bespoke furniture and handpicked finishes are paired to foreground India’s artisanal legacy. Antique details, curated accents and custom interventions lend a layer of cultural tactility.

People hold different notions of beauty, each shaped by memory, culture or imaginative influences borrowed from our surroundings. Yet some spaces, such as this residence, move beyond it, imparting a sentimental connection that is far more enduring, steeped in materiality, architectural detailing and memories of art woven at every step.
