A 65th-floor Mumbai home by RC Design Studio finds its footing in walnut, marble, and light

Nestled comfortably inside a 3,500 sq ft area on the 65th floor of a highrise, this apartment in Mumbai is shaped for a couple who divide their lives between Dubai and India. From this perch high above in Worli, glass, sea, sky and the slow arc of the Coastal Road below materialise. The couple entrusted RC Design Studio to craft a space, unembellished. A brief for a restful base that accommodates recurring trips, evenings with friends, and moments of everyday calm. In response, Roozmehr and Cherag Bardolivala of the firm composed a spatial dialogue: rooms that flow, materials that repeat with intention — marble, silk, walnut, soft-toned textiles.

Underfoot, Italian marble stretches generously, its veins shaded from cream to warm taupe. Walnut panelling grounds the walls, its grain revealing quiet richness without gloss. At the far end, glass frames the sea — drawing in a light that softens as the day folds into evening.

Refrain and repeat

Throughout the apartment, continuity is the aim. The living and dining area is arranged across three linked zones — a formal sitting area, a dining space, and a TV lounge, all of which open out to a balcony that wraps around the apartment. The same marble runs through nearly every room.

In the kitchen, vitrified tiles are used instead, finished in a walnut tone to keep the rhythm without compromising durability. Surplus stone wasn’t discarded: in the master bedroom, leftover slabs were repurposed and fluted. The powder room is the only moment of contrast — malachite, onyx, Bohemian crystal, and a Masiero chandelier. It’s compact but carefully finished. Elsewhere, the language stays quiet.

The sakura-inspired dining area features a Cattelan Italia dining table, dining chairs, and console. A Masiero chandelier provides lighting, complemented by Elementto Lifestyle wallpaper and sheer curtains. The expansive formal living room, delineated into seating, dining, and a TV lounge, features a Natuzzi Italia curved sofa, Minotti armchairs and sofas, and coffee tables from Porada and Ozzio Italia. Furnishings from Obeetee Carpets, AA Living and Sarita Handa, complete the luxurious decor. Objets d’art

“From the outset, the couple emphasised their interest in sourcing high-quality furniture and lighting from renowned European brands,” share Roozmehr and Cherag, partners at RC Design Studio. You see their tasteful nuances in the pieces that populate this home. In the living room, a Phillips Antiques cabinet anchors the space, its surface worn smooth at the edges, as though generations had passed a hand across it mid-conversation. Across from it, a pair of low Italian armchairs catch the afternoon light, the kind you sink into with a coffee or to watch the sea change colour at dusk. In the dining area, the table is chosen not just for its finish but for how it holds six comfortably, eight without strain.

In the main bedroom, the Obeetee carpets run quiet interference between foot and stone: their weave is dense but yielding, the palette fading at the edges like something familiar. Each object, considered in isolation, is beautiful. But their real work is in how they hold the life around them.

In the master bedroom deep olive and brown tones create a luxurious cocoon, enhanced by a fluted marble headboard repurposed from leftover slabs and Armani silk-lined wardrobes. The softest corner

In a home designed to welcome, cocktails at the bar, dinners that stretch into the night, conversations carried from room to room — there is one corner where the energy folds inward. “Among the many thoughtfully designed areas within the apartment, the reading nook in the master bedroom holds particular personal significance,” share Roozmehr and Cherag. Tucked into the primary bedroom, the nook holds a restored Art Deco armchair from Phillips Antiques. It’s angled for light, set near the window. A small table rests beside it, often with a book mid-read, or nothing at all. This is where the rhythm of the home slows down. For a couple whose lives move between cities, arrivals and departures, this space offers steadiness (and of course, a cinematic city view).
