In a home’s he(art)

Studio Patternmaker makes a splash of patterns and colours in this Ahmedabad home

Art is never simply decoration; it’s also an amalgamation of stories and memories. In a home that defines itself by artistic interventions, this space is a visual experience. Built by Studio Patternmaker’s Principal Designer, Parthavi Patel, the 3,000 sq ft home in Ahmedabad, Gujarat co-exists with beauty. The homeowners’ desire to feel art in the space also resulted in the transformative qualities; a burst of colours, patterns and memorabilia that make the space lived-in. The home consists of the living and dining spaces, a kitchen, four bedrooms, a puja room and a terrace.

“We explored how art could shape the atmosphere, how texture and light could echo the brushstrokes of a painting or the form of a sculpture. Slowly, the space began to evolve, not as a canvas for art, but as art itself” — Parthavi Patel

An artistic walkthrough

Using wooden tones as the foundation, the home engages with earthy tones as a background to its artefacts. The greyness of the ceilings gives the home that contributes to the earthy palette, a pause in the eclectic space. A visual treat, shades of beige and rust have a calming effect against the wood stains. Indoor plants bring life to the space, a natural enigma. Quite luxury weaves its way into the home through the spare use of brass accents and dull gold.

The master bedroom hosts the crown jewel – a 100-year-old Pichwai painting that gives the room its identity. Despite its grandness, the room feels deeply personal, owing to the artefacts that have found home among these walls. The library nook, which was also the designer’s favourite area to design, expresses the idea of intimacy in a home. For a homeowner passionate about art and books, the space uses smart storage solutions to keep these treasures.

Just like a story

The home gives a sense that it is alive — it is moving and adjusting to the family’s needs and growth. The story is deeply intimate — housing stories of their teenage daughters growing, souvenirs from travels, and walls that echo laughter and conversation. The space emphasises fluidity, like the terrace is a dramatic opening in the home, where a 60-year-old suspended antique gives a glimpse into the past. Even the living room’s arrangement expresses fluidity between the formal and informal zones. Despite the defined zones of the home, the space feels interconnected — the balance of colours, textures and furniture layout making it feel all part of one story.
