Where a storied past meets childlike wonder

Naked Volume Studio brings nostalgia home to Thrissur

In the quiet lanes of Thrissur, Kerala, Janani, a home by Naked Volume Architecture Studio, rises like a whisper from the past, reimagining a modern dwelling through the eyes of a child. Designed by principal architect Arun Joshy, this home isn’t just built but imagined. The home incorporates seemingly simple aspects of a house — sloping roofs, breezy courtyards and places for ample light to pour in, allowing for any movement to be free and safe, and every corner to be a source of comfort. The house is the present’s ode to the past, a mix of modern with tradition and a place where stories are born.

"One of the biggest considerations was ensuring that the home remained barrier-free and accessible. Every space had to feel connected yet intuitive, allowing for ease of movement without compromising on warmth or intimacy"—Arun Joshy

A padippura, a traditional archway vernacular to Kerala, greets you at the entrance, a transition between the public to a private sanctuary, right into the courtyard that is one with nature. The house unfolds into the combined living, dining, and kitchen space, with no rigid partitions, allowing for a reflection of the engageful family conversations. As you go deeper, the textures turn from earthy tones to oxide and cement in the bedrooms that mature beautifully over time, just like the memories made there, which cover the tranquil abode one seeks in moments of rest.

The emotional bonds of the family are represented by a delicate yet sturdy bridge, guiding you to the intimate areas. Connecting to a reading nook engulfed by louvered glass windows that trickle in sunlight, a bird’s eye view of the space below and a more private retreat into the bedroom. The home’s protective nature is complete with its ever-present overhanging roof, the final architectural gesture.

Janani strikes a delicate balance between Kerala’s rich architectural heritage and modern functionality. Traditional elements like the padippura entrance, sloping roof, and an indoor courtyard with a tree root the home in nostalgia, while the open floor plan, built-in furniture, and minimalist finishes bring in a contemporary touch. The materials are crucial to creating harmony; pure white walls and oxide flooring provide a crisp, contemporary look, while teak and rosewood give warmth and authenticity. Important features like courtyards, verandahs, and elaborate woodwork through locally sourced materials are kept in place to ensure the soul of the design remains alive. “One of the biggest considerations was ensuring that the home remained barrier-free and accessible. Every space had to feel connected yet intuitive, allowing for ease of movement without compromising on warmth or intimacy” says Arun. By embracing traditional methods that stand the test of time, modern fluidity dismantles the rigid structures of the house.

Homeowners, Mr. Harish and his wife were not in search of a house, they envisioned a space steeped in memory and meaning. Inspired by childhood days spent in traditional Kerala homes, they longed for a space that echoed those familiar comforts. Their deep appreciation for heritage guided every design decision, leading to a home that gracefully honours the past while embracing the present.
