A quaint studio apartment admires the pristine blue waters of the Arabian sea in Bandra’s Pali Hill. Soft breeze pierces the lush foliage surrounding the 2,200 sq ft home to explore its bespoke interiors and magnificent use of colour.

Neesha Alwani along with Shruti Jalan, Design Principal of ns*a Architecture and Interiors, wields her design intellect to attribute a colour to each room, adding individuality. Hues of blue and salmon pink breathe life into the subtle charcoal, black, grey, and white, building a beautiful, serene home for a family of four.

Curious Brief

“A deep understanding of the clients’ lifestyle enabled us to design spaces and elements that have come together to make the home a positive and happy space for its occupants,” says Shruti as she themes the home into an elegant and understated blend of textures, colours, and décor.

The heart of the home resides in the living room that houses the master bedroom and den at one end and the kitchen and the kids’ bedroom to the other. A corner of the living room and den lead to the cosy veranda.

This shows the living room from the entrance antechamber. The dining console stands in walnut wood. Fluted and smooth surfaces on the shutters make an intricate pattern. The sculptural forms are from Moonshadow, a series by Atelier Ashiesh Shah. Photography by Suleiman Merchant.

The wrap-around veranda houses a black stone tile floor with scattered grey stone tiles. Wicker and rope outdoor furniture, urns with greens, and a vibrant blue rollout bar make up the outdoor aura. The blue bar adds a pop of colour to the veranda. Photography by Suleiman Merchant.

Tour of every turn of the home

An entrance antechamber guides through a tall arched door to the living and dining spaces. Hues of charcoal, grey, and white reflect off the white walls in the snug sitting room. An abstract painting towers over the circle of comfortable grey sofas and cushioned chairs as they converse with each other.

Tall pottery pieces sit in the corner peering at the room while indoor plants breathe air into it. A funky striped mat relaxes on an interesting flooring pattern that has light grey stone tiles interspersed with charcoal grey stone plates.

The veranda’s flooring offers a sharp contrast with its black stone tile floors and scattered grey stone tiles. Nestled under thick foliage, the veranda’s gleaming white lime plaster walls reflect rich greens. Wicker and rope outdoor furniture pair with viridescent plants plopped inside authentic urns to build a promising friendship.

The den has a fine ribbed texture on its white walls. The study table blends into a wooden grid housed in a niche. A murphy bed opens from behind a ribbed panelling to open into a guest bed. The wooden shelves hold blue ceramic pottery by Eeshaan Kashyap, Claymen. Photography by Suleiman Merchant.

A service counter with white ribbed shutters and a quartz top conveniently resides near the kitchen, adding functionality and aesthetic to the look. Although these transcendent elements add flair to the veranda, a vibrant blue rollout bar, an outsider to the colour palette, acts as the belle of the ball!

On one end, the den enjoys the open veranda and on the other it oversees the ocean. The veranda intervenes as a place to break away from the monotony of overwhelming work. While the study table faces an expansive glass window, overlooking the sea, gives the owners something to look at every time they get distracted.

The portable pull-out bed in the children’s bedroom stands under a large arched alcove with rounded corners. The base of the bed has white ribbing to add texture in the room. Artwork by Bandana Jain hangs above the bed. Photography by Suleiman Merchant.

Fine ribbed textures adorn the white walls to build a cosy space as warm walnut wooden shelves stack up to house distinct blue pottery. A murphy bed, which opens to make the guest bedroom, and tall wardrobes hide behind ribbed panelling to blend with the walls. Ironically, the study room might be the place one goes to for some relaxation.

A sliding door between the den and the dining room disappears when opened, allowing the two rooms to breathe. Majestic glass doors with black panelling stand as the backdrop for the black and white furniture. Salmon pink glows under a beaded hanging light, adding a pop of colour to the subtle dining room.

Ideas to bookmark

The tall arched doors consistently embellish the home in different forms, resembling the hallways of the Jaipur palace. This sense of stability complements the variety of colours that break the monotony of the design. Décor pieces with matte black finish, tall pottery, vibrant greens, and urns accessorise the rooms sophisticatedly.

The guest bathroom has vibrant colours of blue and green. The tiles have an intricate white and black design while the walls have a deep blue mosaic pattern with a white and green floral wallpaper. A white and black console holds the wash basin. Photography by Suleiman Merchant.

This cosy urban home enjoys the luxury to choose between enjoying the lush greenery and the warm ocean. The bathrooms also use floral wallpapers and blue mosaic patterned tiles to resemble the blend between the ocean and green foliage. Every room seamlessly flows into the other like the gentle sea breeze that floats in the abode.
