The hallmark of a well-designed home is that it could belong to no one else. It bears the unmistakable imprint of its owner in every design decision. For those bitten by the travel bug, that imprint is often shaped by the places they’ve visited. Nestled amidst the verdant greens of Kolar, this holiday villa by Houzeome, fashions a retreat that reflects its owner’s penchant for collecting one-of-a-kind treasures from her travels, all under one roof.

“Our early design discussions revolved around creating a home that felt like a personal retreat while celebrating the client’s individuality,” recalls Ipsita Panda. The trickier brief wasn’t square footage but narrative, bringing together diverse themes and experiences within a cohesive story, ensuring each remained part of the same book.

Walk through wanderlust

It’s the year of the horse! The holiday home unfurls with the sight of a reclaimed wood horse that sparks conversation immediately. Pattern and colour drench every room, tying the spaces together, while every eclectic gesture is tempered by austerity. In the living room, pattern-laden wall art and pillows are balanced by a jali-inspired coffee table. The living space takes its cues from the same grammar throughout: Restraint set against vibrancy. Living and dining are peppered under one open volume. The double-height ceiling opens up the room so that its scale never overwhelms the depth of the design. Beaten metal detailing, rattan infills, custom tiles, playful tones and handcrafted artwork present a seesaw of personality, one room more muted, the next more varied.

Pattern with purpose

The kitchen embraces a mint-toned palette, blending European aesthetics while keeping its soul distinctly Indian. An embossed tile backsplash carrying Indian motifs draws the eye; sage green cabinetry anchors the space; all of it punctuated by natural light flooding in. Nothing here recedes quietly into the background; even the staircase asserts itself, its patterned tile drenching the design. In the bedroom, the sage green colour story continues through painted timber framing the bed, while an upholstered bench offers a note of solid colour. Patterns from the rug and the wallpaper nearly mirror each other, while solid colour shadows the room, holding it back from excess. The second bedroom echoes Indian tradition through distressed furniture and more overtly traditional patterns. A recessed niche at the back becomes the room’s quiet backbone. Throughout, there is enough white space left for personality to breathe rather than clash; curated, not crowded.

Moods of the muse

The villa is an echo of its owner’s travels, from the large silk artwork in the living room that transports you to Tibet, the reclaimed wooden horse standing sentinel at the entrance to the European-inspired kitchen. Every room holds a different mood, yet pattern remains a constant thread, its intensity enveloped by the serene view outdoors, itself a quiet contrast to the many moods within. Despite multiple stories living under one roof, the cohesive design language never tips into monotony, because each room is telling a different tale.
