Mahjong, Materials and Meaningful Connections

Millenium Marbles Shoolagiri Factory unveils Angola’s Canhimei marble over mah-jong for design’s leading women in Bangalore

BY

Not every industry gathering needs a keynote — sometimes all it takes is a good table! On a recent Sunday afternoon, nearly thirty women principal architects and interior designers sat down for an intense session of Mahjong in Bengaluru. Hosted by Only Mahjongg and Millennium Marbles Shoolagiri, the gathering had no agenda beyond good company and conversations that had nothing to do with countertops.

The afternoon was brought to life in collaboration with Only Mahjongg, a women-led initiative known for its workshops and luxe game nights across the country. Mahjong was less a choice and more of a tactile decision. A game of Mahjong is built entirely from a finite set of standardised tiles that are identical in form but endlessly reconfigurable in meaning. A single tile carries no value on its own. It is the arrangement, the sequence, the relationship between one piece and the next that produces a hand worth playing. It is the exact discipline that governs how a facade is drawn, or a floor is laid. Inevitably, Mahjong became the one game in the room that would speak the same design language as its audience.

Established in 2016 as Millenium Marbles’ second manufacturing unit, the Shoolagiri Factory plays an important role in the company’s ability to process and finish imported natural stones for supply to the South Indian market. Equipped with cutting-edge machinery and technology, the Millenium Marbles Shoolagiri.

With over 25 years of experience in the natural stone industry, Millenium Marbles imports over 500 varieties of marble from more than 25 destinations across the world. Its extensive portfolio spans imported marbles including onyx, travertine, limestone, exotic stones and quartzites, each selected for its distinctive character, colour, veining and natural movement. The brand’s approach extends beyond sourcing, with a strong emphasis on craftsmanship, precision and the finer details that bring out the inherent beauty of each stone.

The factory combines precision with expert craftsmanship, handling cutting, finishing, polishing and quality control at every stage. Its presence in Tamil Nadu strengthens Millenium Marbles’ reach across the region’s architecture and design fraternity, providing access to its extensive portfolio of global natural stones.

The afternoon also marked an exclusive first look at Canhimei, a rare imported marble from Angola, recently introduced to India. Defined by rich natural movement, layered tonal variation and an earthy, understated elegance, Canhimei has, until now, remained relatively unexplored in the Indian market. Canhimei may have been the afternoon’s quiet reveal, but the headline was the room itself, with conversations flowing easily between Mahjong rounds. That’s the kind of networking that actually sticks, the kind that happens over a good table and a few hours well spent!
