Studio Rohini Bagla designs a sinuous pause amid Mumbai’s rush

Mumbai, with its dense population, has little breathing space, with houses facing each other and lacks connectivity to the environment. Cramped amidst the city’s hustle, a home finds its heart overlooking the serene Powai Lake. Designed by Studio Rohini Bagla, this home for a young family is immersed in the values of both poetry and cohesiveness. After the city’s chaos, this home gently embraces its residents, offering a harmonious sense of calm and rest. A 4BHK residence expressing rhythm and emotion creates a dialogue between sublimity and soul. As the sun sets over the city of dreams, architecture intervenes between the city’s high-octane, relentless pace and a family’s abode, inducing urban luxury within a lakeside residence.

SINUOUS SPACES

A grand coalescence of art and atmosphere, the living room sets the tone with luxe, framing the lake along minimal architectural elements. A circular sofa alongside deep-wine Italian armchairs envelops a sculptural marble fireplace. Subtle hints of gold and red from the chandelier orchestrate the space into a symphony. The living room flows into the dining area, narrating an austere opulence, with curved niches and filigreed threadwork creating moments of stillness. Carved in white marble and brushed with gold, the mandir evinces the home’s flowing energy.

The television room has an essence of its own, highlighting the curved vertical surfaces that continue into the ceiling, sculpting an enclosure. The ambient glowing totem lights accentuate the textures of the hammered pearl finish. The residence transcends physical form to personify a distinct spirit — one that is inviting, articulate, and deeply reflective of its inhabitants.

SPACES BEYOND

Often overlooked, the kitchen is the space where conversations actually happen, elevating everyday rituals. The soft pearl-drop lights dangling from the ceiling illuminate the stone island, laying the foundation for the kitchen. Expecting artistry where least anticipated, the powder bathroom becomes an unexpected canvas, wrapped in fluted marble and accented with rose gold. At the same time, the children’s room bursts with cheerful geometry and tactile warmth. Yellow monochromes introduce a spirited, majestic touch, integrating the space with the home’s cohesive identity. The guest suite, placidly in sage tones and bespoke textures, invites dwellers to unwind. Sunlight streams through a curved glass wardrobe, wrapping the master suite in sinuous lines and muted golds.

The city of Mumbai never sleeps, but it offers a home to immigrants with dreams. At twilight, looking at the street lights and hues of orange reflecting on the lake, this cocoon serenades its weary residents, reassuring them that they are home.
