Molteni&C’s Mumbai debut shapes a new design scene

Bringing Italian craftsmanship to India, Molteni&C marks a significant design moment

BY

In a city that thrives on reinvention, Molteni&C’s Mumbai flagship arrives as an immersive space that reflects the brand’s global expansion and alignment with India’s growing design consciousness. Situated in the city’s luxury district, the store signals a pivotal moment for the Italian design house, marking its continued investment in a market that is steadily shaping its own identity. For Giovanni Molteni, Vice President of Molteni&C, the decision feels intuitive. “The Indian design market is evolving rapidly and becoming increasingly sophisticated,” he notes, framing the opening as timely and necessary. Developed in partnership with Vivono Designs, which is known for its nuanced understanding of the Indian luxury interiors landscape, the store bridges global design with the local environment.

Sequence of spaces

Founded in 1934 as an artisanal workshop, Molteni&C has grown into a leading name in high-end furniture. Envisioned as more than a showroom, the flagship reveals itself as a series of lived spaces. The journey begins outdoors, where boundaries dissolve, and interiors unfold with an effortless continuity. Living areas, dining zones and private quarters are orchestrated with precision, each piece contributing to the spatial narrative. Sculptural sofas, modular systems and heritage pieces coexist with architectural elements such as sliding doors and walk-in wardrobes, creating a layered environment that moves from convivial to contemplative. The space embodies what Giovanni describes as the culture of quality living, a philosophy that privileges the way spaces are experienced over time. For Giovanni, these are not just compositions but environments where people can express their best selves, a reflection of the brand’s intent to shape how we live and not just how spaces look.

Refined through time

The continuity is reflected in the brand’s ability to move fluidly between past and present. “Italian design is often seen as purely aesthetic,” he notes, “but it is equally about engineering, durability and function.” The collaborations span generations, from Gio Ponti to Vincent Van Duysen, each bringing a distinct perspective that respects the brand’s design DNA. Archival pieces are revived and recontextualised for their enduring relevance and seamless integration into contemporary living. Pieces that appear effortless are often the result of rigorous refinement. “Simplicity is never accidental,” Giovanni explains, underscoring a process where detail becomes the site of innovation. In a global landscape increasingly defined by uniformity, this commitment to balancing between form, heritage and evolution lends the brand a clear authorship. As luxury continues to shift towards values of authenticity and sustainability, Molteni&C’s approach feels aligned with the cultural recalibration. The Mumbai flagship is a reflection of changing aspirations. In Mumbai, Molteni&C presents a way of living, shaped by design as well as the rhythms of everyday life. As Giovanni says, it is one of the most dynamic and international markets today, with a new generation of design-conscious clients shaping the demand.
