On a crystal route

Baccarat arrives in New Delhi with plans to reveal more stores in India

BY

This French maison has always known how to turn crystal into theatre. With 260 years of history, Baccarat’s art of crystalware has always been embedded in a slow-lingering spectacle of craftsmanship and history. Rewind a few centuries ago, in the 1800s, an Indian patron’s sketch of a traditional throne became the blueprint for one of Baccarat’s most storied collections, crafted out of clear-shaped cut crystal and removable tufted velvet, and painstakingly carried across oceans and landscapes to India.

Imaginative but realistic, this legacy echoes loud at Baccarat’s flagship new destination at The Chanakya Mall in New Delhi. The first and one of its kind outfitted with regal chandeliers, collections across tableware, barware, vases, decoratives and more. Think centuries-old savoir faire and our evolving appreciation for intricate techniques and lasting grandeur.  “Although our story with India began nearly 140 years ago, it is now that a new chapter begins. Over the past decade, we have crafted bespoke creations for private residences, where our chandeliers, Prestige vases, and art de vivre collections are often chosen to grace the most exquisite interiors,” explains Laurence Nicolas, CEO, Baccarat.

“Although our story with India began nearly 140 years ago, it is now that a new chapter begins"

The store perched on the second level of The Chanakya gleams beyond its boundaries, stamped with a fiery red facade and the glimmer of crystals drawing you closer to it. An easy layout inside leads to corners curiosity alongside a lounge area draped completely in red; unmissably magnificent. On the day of the launch, another landmark was also the 84-light Zénith chandelier in clear and red crystal by French Ambassador Thierry Mathou.

“We are planning re-editions of iconic creations exclusively for the Indian market, such as the Elephant Liquor Cabinet presented at the 1878 Paris World Fair, as well as collaborations with Indian artists and designers to reinterpret some of our signature pieces through a new cultural lens,” reveals Nicolas.

The India trajectory for the French maison is also set to witness new venues around the country, including MG Road in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai in 2026.

How a small provincial workshop came to shape the tables of royalty and the imagination of the world is a story that continues to intrigue. Born in 1764 in a quiet town in eastern France, Baccarat has traveled far beyond its origins, evolving into a global identity that today stands for the very essence of the French art de vivre.
