An opportunity for design enthusiasts

India’s incredible craft heritage has been a source of inspiration for designers everywhere. But with today’s consumers looking for more transparency, sustainability and authenticity, the future of fashion and design is all about blending tradition with innovation. That’s where Istituto Marangoni Mumbai comes in as they are inviting aspiring designers and creative minds to take part in the ‘Celebrating India’s Craft Legacy’ scholarship contest — an exciting opportunity to reimagine Indian craftsmanship for today’s world.

Open to undergraduate, postgraduate and one-year programme applicants, the competition seeks one-of-a-kind proposals that reimagine Indian crafts in a socially and environmentally responsible context. From fashion design and business to interior and product design, participants are encouraged to present original well-researched ideas that address modern consumer demands while honouring India’s artisanal heritage.

Undergraduate applicants can explore fashion design by creating a capsule collection of traditional crafts, or delve into fashion business strategies that blend heritage with modern markets. Styling enthusiasts can ideate a high-fashion photoshoot for a luxury magazine while interior design students can craft a storytelling-driven residential space inspired by India’s local craftsmanship. Product design, visual design and fragrances and cosmetics management also offer dynamic platforms for exhibiting sustainable craft-infused concepts.

Postgraduate students can propose the creation of a luxury brand based on traditional crafts, offering a fresh perspective on the global market. Those focusing on fashion and textile design management get the chance to innovate two traditional crafts, presenting original design ideas backed by research.

Applications, including research-backed proposals, mood boards and concept illustrations must be submitted by March 31st 2025.

This competition is not just a scholarship — it’s a gateway to redefining Indian craft traditions for the next generation. If you have a passion for design and innovation, this is your chance to make an impact.
