Not every industry gathering needs a keynote — sometimes all it takes is a good table! On a recent Sunday afternoon, nearly thirty women principal architects and interior designers sat down for an intense session of Mahjong in Bengaluru. Hosted by Only Mahjongg and Millennium Marbles Shoolagiri, the gathering had no agenda beyond good company and conversations that had nothing to do with countertops.
The afternoon was brought to life in collaboration with Only Mahjongg, a women-led initiative known for its workshops and luxe game nights across the country. Mahjong was less a choice and more of a tactile decision. A game of Mahjong is built entirely from a finite set of standardised tiles that are identical in form but endlessly reconfigurable in meaning. A single tile carries no value on its own. It is the arrangement, the sequence, the relationship between one piece and the next that produces a hand worth playing. It is the exact discipline that governs how a facade is drawn, or a floor is laid. Inevitably, Mahjong became the one game in the room that would speak the same design language as its audience.
