A home’s dual nature

This Mumbai home by Deshna Kasliwal reshifts the focus on how we view black and white

When we say black and white, we aren’t referring to a decades-old film. A home in Mumbai by the name of Neither Noir, designed by Deshna Kasliwal of her eponymous firm is inspired by contrasts — through colours and detailed characteristics. Embracing the old-school tint, the multigenerational home sits as a dual coloured kaleidoscope. With a 1,200 sq ft area, the home comprises a living and dining space, two bedrooms, three bathrooms, as well as a lobby and a deck.

“The concept was built around the idea of opposites, using black and white as a foundation. We decided to avoid typical wooden tones to create a bolder, modern feel” — Deshna Kasliwal

Balancing act

The theme of duality is evident in the limited yet powerful colour palette of black and white, also a reflection of the homeowners’ distinctive personalities. By using these two tones, the home takes on a bolder approach with a modern feel. Like an intermission, brass accents break the dual colour palette, creating a harmonious blend that balances out the home. “Black and white palette represents strength and clarity, while the brass accents symbolise youth, energy, and warmth,” says Deshna.

A tale of two generations

This home may remind you of an old film, but it has a modern twist. “The idea was to bring these opposing elements together to create a balanced home that reflects the dynamic between the heads of the family and the younger generation,” says Deshna. By incorporating different textures, luxury and practicality are woven into the home. The space explores multiple finishes — ombre PU, metallic sheens and various textures. Woven wallpapers add texture to the space, while brass accents are a curious mix amongst the black and white and Italian marble complements the Italian furniture.

Less can be more

Space might be a myth in Mumbai, but Neither Noir proves us wrong. This home features storage solutions that are discreetly incorporated into its design elements. Every inch of the house is highly functional. Furniture for the home was custom-made in Italy, as a way of ensuring that it perfectly fit in the home, as well as complementing the design. This furnishing gives the space a personal character and an element of uniqueness.
