From classic to offbeat – take in this city’s sights and sounds. In the midst of the chaotic, colourful streets thrive vibrant marketplaces, fairy tale monuments and elaborately flavoured meals fit for royalty.

1. PM Allag Buksh & SonsThe art of antique, intricate metal embossing was mastered 135 years ago, apparently at this local handicrafts store. Take your pick from the varied collection of brass trays of different sizes, lamps and historic armour. Where: Mirza Ismail Road, Jaipur 04

2. Kishanpole Bazaar If you love bandhani this is the place to be. Head to Rangwalon Ki Galli and see how artisans skillfully use the ancient tie and dye method on white fabrics. The marketplace is also known for its quality timber furniture and decorative items. Where: Kishanpole Bazaar Road, Jaipur 02

3. Sakshi Block Printing Factory Try your hand at authentic block printing on cloth, or take a quick blue pottery lesson at the spinning wheel. If you don’t want to get your hands dirty, make sure you pick up souvenirs – they’ll make great Diwali favours. Where: B26, Parasurampuri, opposite Jalmahal, Amer Road, Jaipur 02

4. Galta Monkey TempleEven if you’re not the religious kind, this place will make you have a little hope and faith in world peace. Built entirely out of pink sandstone, it is fringed by mountains and surrounded by seven sacred water bodies – one of which is a popular meeting spot for rhesus monkeys. Where: Galta Ji, Jaipur 31

5. Laxmi Misthan Bhandar In the midst of a bustling market lies this stall with an explosion of milk and pure ghee based silver specked sweets. Its mawa kachoris and ghewar, a deep fried typical Rajasthani dessert, is worth the 20 minute wait. Where: 100 Johari Bazaar, Jaipur 01

6. Shop 212 LassiwalaMost of the pink city’s local lassi shops churn the frothy beverage on the spot, and serve it either sweet or salty in tiny terracotta clay cups. Several proxy lassiwalas will try to win your heart but this kiosk is your best bet for the real creamy deal. Where: Mirza Ismail Road, Ashok Nagar, Jaipur 01
