Over the years, the talented Mumbai based creative Rooshad Shroff has been expertly envisioning spaces and crafting designs using unusual materials  and techniques. Today, this celebrated visionary’s name and works are one step ahead of him. His recent stint is his show titled 15,556 at Delhi based Pundole’s that will bring together 26 of his beautiful furniture pieces.

We caught up with him just days before the big preview to learn more. While elaborating on the show, he revealed that although having been trained as an architect, he had constantly been involved with different kind of furniture and product development. “It’s always been in a realm of more research and prototype, so there was never really a point in which I made a larger collection or even showed them off.”
A keen interest in making furniture as a larger part of his practice, and curating a show, led to his association with Pundole’s. They came on board to present him as their artist/designer for the travelling show 15,556, which would kick off in Delhi and followed by another edition in Mumbai in June.
As we probed what the number signified, he added “The title 15,556 is the actual man hours that have gone into the making of these pieces. All the furniture pieces are hand-made and throughout the last five years I have been focusing a lot on local crafts by different artisans across the country. This show is really putting together with know-how to form these pieces.”
The show is segregated into three sections. First one will convene embroidery on wood, second is marble-marble and lastly colour sanding. The creative has experimented with embroidery on wood technique before as well, bagging him his first EDIDA. The same wall cladding is now on furniture pieces like chairs, sofas, loungers and screens, celebrating local crafts but in a contemporary setting.
“As a medium we used marble carving, so within that there are the EDIDA winning marble bulbs and different marble articles that all carved out. The last section is colour sanding, where layers and layers of paint are painted on top of each other, and then I physically scrapped them with sand paper it to reveal different contours of the paints to form different pieces, he concludes.
Some of these pieces in some capacity have been seen before and some of them are new, but there are iterations or like refinements of those pieces also which have been seen previously. The show will bring together 26 pieces in all.
