It is no secret that green, the colour of the great outdoors, can liven up any space. At the Verde Home in Ranchi, Jharkhand, O’nest Interiors uses this versatile colour to the fullest. Occupying 3,100 sq ft, the rooms in the home are an eclectic mix of design elements tied together by a splash of green.
Homely elegance
The living room takes a modern spin on classic design details and remains true to the homeowners’ tastes. Intricate mouldings on the pristine white walls and ceilings add a touch of elegance while concealing the randomly placed beams. A curved olive green sofa is the centrepiece. To the right, a cane shoe rack doubles up as a display rack with shelves and a gold rim. A black standalone console finished in gold trim fringed at either side serves as a statement furniture piece. These details create a markedly opulent yet warm and inviting ambience. The oversized custom-made painting by Richa Kashelkar complements and enhances one’s experience of the space.
Keeping in mind the dualities of warm and cold and light and dark, the designers fashioned a fireplace made in black marble, which stands out against the deep forest green hue of the surrounding wall. The fluted wall with a bar unit on either side, the architraves and the fire mantle lend depth and create interest. The space takes on a dreamy and relaxing atmosphere with the custom-made striped chairs, a black coffee table, an overhead chandelier and the irregularly-shaped rug below.
The dining area carries forth the opulence, offset by a touch of minimalism. Black arch sliding doors that lead to the kitchen add a contemporary touch to the space. The kitchen is distinguished by neutral tones — grey cabinets and a Kalinga table are paired with black-and-white vitrified tiles. The overheads are enhanced using fluted glass.
The dining area also leads to the Mandir, which hosts a pooja console and a tall cabinet for extra storage. The floor is finished in ethnic printed tiles to match the green checked wall panelling accentuated by decals.
Bedrooms: distinct and inviting!
The primary bedroom is a serene space with a monochrome palette that is soothing to the eyes. The space caters to the homeowner’s need for extra storage with two wardrobes. While one of these is inside the room, the second is a walk-in closet made by reducing the elongated dead space in the room. It leads to a luxurious bathroom with black marble walls and printed black floor tiles.
The den, an extension of the primary bedroom, follows a similar theme. The black-and-white rug, the green armchairs and the houndstooth fabric on the stand-alone bench are statement pieces that reflect natural light and create a comfortable and inviting space.
The parents’ bedroom presents a contrast to the refinement of the previous rooms. “This bedroom was one of our favourite spaces of the house, a place where one would just want to stay forever. The concept of this room was very wabi-sabi and minimal. The raw and understated look of the room makes it stand apart and a perfect abode for an elderly couple,” say Ankita Dabrai and Neha Sawhney Chadha, Principal Designers of O’nest Interiors. The chandeliers and wardrobe in cane finish add a rustic touch to the space.
The quirky guest bedroom poses another contrast. A tropical wallpaper forms the backdrop for a black poster bed. A rocking chair in bold black-and-white stripes is a lively touch. Soothing hues of green once again make an appearance here, creating an uplifting mood reminiscent of a holiday.
The daughter’s bedroom is a whimsical space designed to be a dream room for a ten-year-old. With a high headboard and shell chandeliers on either side of the bed, fur cushions and a study that houses an arched bookshelf, this room is right out of a fairy tale, a theme that continues in the bathroom with elegant moulding details and printed green tiles.
Each room in the house comes together to create the eclectic Verde Home, a space distinguished by its playful yet elegant game of hide-and-seek with green.
