Spinning light, shifting shadows

The Deep Jyoti Stambh by Ronak Hingarh Design Studio melds tradition with innovation

BY

In a striking confluence of heritage and innovation, Ronak Hingarh [RH(a+d)] unveils the Deep Jyoti Stambh at India Design ID following its much-lauded debut at Dubai Design Week 2024. Drawing inspiration from traditional deepmalas — the ornate lamp towers that grace temple courtyards in southern India — this kinetic installation reimagines the ancient ritual of lighting a lamp through a contemporary lens, offering an immersive, sensory and dynamic experience that transcends borders.

Global appeal with cultural roots

Conceived in wood for the indoors and iterated in stainless steel for the outdoors, the installation is crafted from modular panels. The Deep Jyoti Stambh embodies the interplay between light and dark, balance and connection. As its cylindrical form rotates — reminiscent of a Buddhist prayer wheel — light and shadow engage in a hypnotic dance evoking the theme of change. This interplay not only mirrors the cyclical nature of life but also invites personal introspection, transforming the act of turning the stambh into a meditative ritual.

Rooted in Indian heritage yet global in appeal, the installation resonates deeply with collectors, hospitality spaces and cultural connoisseurs. Its dynamic form invites engagement, creating a poetic narrative of light dispelling darkness — an everlasting metaphor for hope and transformation. As the shadows and reflections change with each rotation, viewers find themselves drawn into a quiet moment of reflection where art becomes a bridge between the past and present and creates a dialogue between the user and their surroundings.

The visionary behind the installation

The creative force behind this evocative work is architect Ronak Hingarh, whose journey spans continents and disciplines. A postgraduate from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Hingarh’s design language blends architecture and material innovation with ceramics, textiles, resin, wood and steel. His studio, founded in 2019, has become a beacon of thoughtful design where each project weaves together nature, materiality and storytelling.

The Deep Jyoti Stambh isn’t just something you admire from afar — it invites you to step closer, to spin its cylindrical form and watch the shadows shift. It’s a piece that sparks curiosity and quiet reflection, reminding us that even in the most modern of designs there’s room for ancient stories to be retold. As Ronak Hingarh continues to experiment with new materials and push creative boundaries, his work serves as a beautiful reminder that art is most powerful when it invites us to pause, engage and feel.
