A home by the seashore

Avas Living in Alibaug is a sanctuary that gives seaside-inspired shape to the idea of getaways

BY

Concocted to feel like a home that was brought in by the waters that lull outside, this coastal Alibaug home is exactly the sanctuary that makes you want to get away (to the indoors). Nestled amongst the palm trees, the 2,700 sq ft bungalow sits within the Avās Living community on the island. Inside, a palette of soft whites, ocean blues and sandy neutrals fold into each other like gentle waves.

Taking inspiration from the Beach House by the Avas Design Studio in collaboration with The Charcoal Project, this three-bedroom home uses materials that elicit a feeling of peaceful resplendence and a sun-dappled setting. “We wanted the villa to evoke that instant sense of calm you feel when you arrive at a beach house: the slower rhythm, the soft breeze, the filtered sunlight, the barefoot ease. That’s where the design journey began,” shares Gauri Khanna, Head of Interiors at Avās Wellness.

Setting the scene for a seaside home

From an outdoor living area to a sunset lounge terrace, each corner of this home is crafted to feel like an effortless extension of the outside. A soaring double-height ceiling for the living room welcomes each ray of sun, as the rest of the home flows seamlessly into one another. Bright airy windows and blonde wood details in the doors and furniture keep the palette light and summery, anchored by a central sunset lounge with an eye-catching skylight that serves as a sunny place to rest.

Sandy details

Akin to the unique composition of each grain of sand, Veeran finds ways to quietly incorporate hints of personality within this coastal portrait. Patterned blue tiles in the washroom tie back to the watery mood of the outdoors, while the accent living room furniture and patterned cushions of blue add dashes of colour. “The bathrooms were an unexpected joy to design. We treated each one as its own little world, playing with soft blue patterned tiles, different textures, and unique layouts to give every space its own identity while still tying back to the coastal mood of the home,” shares Gauri.

Every element of the house is thoughtfully put together – where openness meets subtle detailing, such as the wood panel wrapped ceilings on the bungalow’s exterior, speaks to the cohesive narrative of the home. Built like an extension of the shoreline, this home is sure to leave those who dwell within or even just visit with a coastal hangover long after they leave.
