Threads of time: Inside Venjara Carpets’ new design showcase

Four immersive zones, one enduring legacy: Aishaa Nensey weaves a new chapter for Venjara Carpets

In the world of contemporary textiles, Venjara Carpets remains one of India’s most compelling custodians of woven heritage. With roots stretching back to 1961 — and philosophically to the grand Mughal weaving ateliers — the brand continues to honour time-honed craft while expanding the creative boundaries of what a carpet can be. Today, Venjara presents its latest showcase, an immersive spatial experience designed by Aishaa Nensey and Three Entertainment. Guided by their intuitive, material-sensitive approach, the showcase unfolds across four evocative zones, each expressing a different chapter in Venjara’s design evolution.

A heritage woven into time

The journey opens with a poetic homage to the brand’s origins. Here, Venjara revisits the early decades of hand-knotting, a craft revived in post-Independence India, and elevates it into a visceral experience. A sweeping river of red carpets flows across floors and walls, converting textiles into architectural contours. Persian-inspired motifs appear in playful reinterpretations: a blooming rose rendered in intricate knots, an ice-cream cone transformed into tactile art and a whimsical mirror framed in a woven texture. This zone embodies Venjara’s ethos: revere heritage, but reimagine it with lightness, joy and creative daring.

Where craft meets contemporary artistry

The next chapter enters the modern era, drawing from the mid-century movement that redefined rugs as sculptural design statements. Wool and silk come alive in vivid contrasts, while surreal compositions challenge the viewer’s perception. Carpets ascend the walls like contemporary tapestries, invoking historical opulence through a fresh, minimalist lens. Black-and-white illusions, distortions and bold pattern interplay create a sense of movement and depth. This zone celebrates Venjara’s ability to harmonise traditional weaving mastery with expressive, boundary-pushing artistry, where a rug becomes an artwork and an artwork becomes an experience.

A bold shift into expressive design

Bursting with personality, this zone draws from the maximalist spirit of the 1980s: a period defined by individuality, exuberance and unconventional form. Venjara brings this energy to life through its Hand Carved Collection, where rugs break free from symmetry and convention. Shape rugs curve and bend like sculptural installations, layered textures invite touch and daring palettes redefine what a living space can feel like. Banana silk and bamboo silk introduce a soft, luminous sheen, dyed in ikkat-inspired hues that feel both nostalgic and modern. Furniture bends, textiles spill across surfaces and lighting glows with quiet innovation. The effect is bold yet approachable: a celebration of expressive design with craftsmanship at its heart.

Sustainability reimagined for the future

The final chapter looks ahead with the Bahya Collection, Venjara’s significant step into sustainable textile innovation. Crafted from PET yarn made of recycled plastic bottles, these rugs offer durability without compromising beauty. Designed to withstand outdoor elements while maintaining indoor refinement, they represent a forward-thinking blend of resilience, tactility and conscious design. Earthy tones, woven wall panels, organic elements and sculptural lighting create a raw yet poetic atmosphere.

Overhead, scalloped textile panels ripple in colourful linear patterns—echoing the rhythm of weaving itself. At the centre, a collaborative diwan by Nynika (Founder, Studio Nyn) x Venjara Carpets reinterprets a 16th-century Afghan kilim through a contemporary metal-mesh structure, bridging centuries of craft into a singular design moment.

Across these four chapters, Venjara’s latest showcase becomes more than a curated experience—it becomes a woven narrative of heritage, innovation and creative evolution. From ancestral techniques to sustainable new materials, from quiet traditions to fearless modernity, Venjara Carpets continues to define what textile storytelling looks like in the present—and what it can become in the future.
