A modern-traditional jewel

Temple Town reimagines heritage as a living story of inspiring, artistic clues

BY

Keeping tradition alive in the modern age is no small feat. Yet, tucked away in the serene landscapes of Kollam in Kerala, the 3,500 sq ft apartment designed by Meera Pyarelal, Founder and Creative Director of Temple Town is a home infused with an ethos of modern Indian elegance. It’s a sustainable haven where time-honoured craftsmanship and contemporary design aren’t rivals, but the perfect duo.

The interplay between tradition and modernity unfolds across this expansive apartment, creating a harmonious blend of past and present. Discussions revolved around creating a warm, welcoming space that celebrates natural light, ventilation and the stunning lake view. Practicality and hospitality were the main influences that shaped the design of the enthralling home.

“Designing the living room was a joy, it’s the heart of the home, where the brass swing became a centerpiece for both function and relaxation, perfectly framing the lake view” — Meera Pyarelal

A walk through the home

Upon entering, a carefully positioned mirror down the passage creates the illusion of capaciousness. Rich wooden panelling sets the tone of warmth while a brass swing — a nod to Kerala’s cultural legacy — makes for the ideal spot to enjoy the perfect cup of hot chai on a chilled monsoon evening.

“Designing the living room was a joy — it’s the heart of the home, where the brass swing became a centerpiece for both function and relaxation, perfectly framing the lake view,” says Meera. “The most challenging part was incorporating a second work kitchen and utility areas without compromising on space or aesthetics,” she adds. The result? A home that remains both highly functional and visually compelling.

In the dining area, an exquisite wall of mirrors with brass detailing subtly amplifies the soft light filtering through the French windows. The dining table covered in this golden glow becomes a stage for intimate conversations while it echoes of past gatherings with a promise of those yet to come.

The flow continues into the kitchen and pantry where form and function exist in harmony. The balconies add a front row seat to the captivating views and the decision to eliminate the wall separating the drawing and dining areas enhance the openness reinforcing the home’s airy, unencumbered feel.

Beyond, the master bedroom envelops its inhabitants in a cocoon of understated opulence. A cosy four-poster bed dressed in botanical prints and ikats exudes a one-of-a-kind charm, complemented by hand-painted table lamps that cast a warm inviting glow. The daughter’s bedroom strikes a playful yet bold red and white palette reminiscent of candy canes. While the son’s room appears to be the polar opposite where a moody forest-inspired wallpaper is the dramatic backdrop.

Palette rooted in nature

Nature is the muse and medium in this thoughtfully curated home. The living room holds a harmonious blend of nature-inspired hues with a teal sofa complementing the mesmerising colour of the lake. It stands in striking contrast to an earthy mix of greens, rusts and natural wood tones.

Sustainability is at the heart of the design, where locally sourced and recycled wood breathes new life into furniture. Repurposed ukhlis find new function as coffee tables while water-based polishes ensure a toxin-free environment. A deep commitment to traditional craftsmanship shines through the collaboration with local artisans, preserving heritage while minimising the environmental footprint.

In Meera’s hands, the design beautifully honours Kerala’s rich heritage and is an embrace of modern living. It feels like a heartfelt tribute to the past, reinterpreted with care and creativity for today’s world.
