A wabi-sabi retreat

In Bengaluru: A home that oscillates between Wabi Sabi grace and Scandi comfort

Every home tells a story, but some whisper in tones of softness, ease and a sense of belonging. Amid the kinetic pulse of Bengaluru, this 1800 sq ft home by Syzygy Designz feels like an exhale—a bright, airy space that exudes unbridled warmth. Conceived by principal architect Asha Mogaral, the 3 BHK apartment is an intimate retreat for a family of four. As a health professional, the husband’s guiding mantra—“health is a necessity, not a luxury”—became the design cornerstone.

“The brief was crystal clear from the outset: a cosy space that celebrates natural light and organic materials”, avers Asha.”The goal was to create a visual language that values serenity over spectacle.” Wabi-sabi’s raw grace sets the rhythm, softened by Scandinavian sensibilities that lend a contemporary cadence. Dubbed Turabi after the earthy palette that defines its character, the resultant abode nurtures body and soul in equal measure.

Anchored by a synergy of sculptural forms and sleek floating surfaces, the home orchestrates tranquility with flamboyance – hinted at first by a customized storage-sitting ensemble in the foyer, and further underscored by an inviting living room with diverse elements. Modular furniture was strategically employed for the built-in pieces, ensuring the ambitious 45-day timeline was met without compromising design.

Throughout, the expanse is unified by lime plastered walls, while the builder flooring was replaced with Manokamana Ceramics’ vitrified tiles laid in brick pattern to fit the rustic theme. Wood emerges as a central motif – from the ceiling rafters to furniture frames – kept in light hues for a minimalist flair. Spiraled table legs forego a bulky look, juxtaposed with clean lines for a harmonious balance.

A fluted bar cum breakfast counter with acrylic shutters subtly delineates the living and dining areas, which features a six-seater arrangement ”with tailor made pieces”. Adjacent, the designer fulfills the family’s request for a simple and open pooja corner with refined finesse. Yet, the pièce de résistance of this space is the bespoke console, its legs artfully mimicking the form of stacked oversized pebbles.

A shouldered archway, cast in gypsum, beckons into the U shaped kitchen. In keeping with the clients’ desire for an easy-to-maintain kitchen, the space is enveloped in a glossy acrylic finish, punctuated by champagne blush handles. Terrazzo tiles, in a matching colour scheme, form the backsplash and countertop.  But what truly draws the gaze are the Moroccan tiles underfoot that inject depth to this placid ambience.

Every detail in the bedrooms speaks to a personalised vision, where effortless sophistication prevails. The master suite is influenced by the couple’s penchant for tan hue, coupled with chocolate brown and cane accents for a chic contrast. “They wanted an expansive headboard, so we fabricated one that would offer ergonomic comfort for both the back and head”, explains Asha. Nestled by the window, an armchair offers a snug nook  for curling up with a book and a warm cup of coffee.

A feminine, pink-free aesthetic was sought by the teenage daughter. Fluid yet abstract curves were leveraged to reinforce her room’s soft theme – from the leather and jute headboard to the study desk backdrop and stepped suspended ceiling – all drenched in a spectrum of earthy browns.

The son’s bedroom asserts a distinct personality- the sole room in the home that detours from the warm neutral palette. A car-shaped bed, shiplap headboard, gingham wallpaper, a vibrant pouffe – the room is a multifaceted wonder, yet everything ties together with cohesion. A common feature across the private spaces is the floor-to-ceiling wardrobes, with shutters divided into three segments, each showcasing a unique theme, encased in lacquered glass.

In Turabi, design becomes the vessel for well-being through natural simplicity and optimum functionality. With every careful consideration, Asha reminds us that true comfort lies in spaces that reflect our holistic need for peace, health, and calmness.
