This Hyderabad home by Sona Reddy celebrates colours of everyday

From scrumptious monochromes to rich textures, Sona Reddy designs an 8,350 sq ft family home in Hyderabad in a quiet mango orchard. Sights and experiences all around — it takes one from soaking in the colours of everyday and settling amidst the company of materials to wanting to take a dip in the pool — in a single, savoured look.

“The curved walls and pink lime plaster surfaces feel soft and welcoming, not stark like a lot of modern homes. The oxide floors stay cool underfoot even in summer heat, and the cane panels do a great job filtering sunlight without blocking it completely,” enlightens Sona Reddy, principal designer of her eponymous firm. The home isn’t a space, it’s a concept; of calm and collected moments for the family to cherish.

A snooker table and a patchwork wall…

Can one expect to be taken aback by the bright deep L shaped couche at the get go? Absolutely. But we can also expect a deep sense of wonder as soon as one steps into the living room, from the high ceiling and custom pendant light that is more of an art fixture. The lounge space also comprises the kitchen and dining space, in shapes of taupe and black. Just a step down from the main living area, is the television room with the Indian style floor seating for intimate and warm movie nights.

A mezzanine with a black base snooker table, a fabric patchwork clad wall and a cloud like light fixture? Sign us up. The home is suffice with spaces for calm and conversation and some for amusing evenings with your loved ones.

Monochrome meets a breath of fresh air, in every bedroom you walk into. Slate Grey, sage green, salmon and slate blue all on pink lime plaster surfaces that keep the tones light and soft. Touches of rattan and low hanging fans are a repeat story across rooms. “Each bedroom sticks to one main colour — sage green in one, slate blue in another — which sounds simple but actually feels really calming,” Sona says.

Many materials but monochrome

A hitched breath, and quiet moments galore. The bathroom bathed in blue, instills a sense of being surrounded by deep seas with the sun peaking in through the window. Minimalism can truly feel meditative. “Instead of trying to match everything perfectly, each room gets its own personality through colour,” says Sona.

The materials are more than design. They cater to steps taken on cool stone flooring (oxide, Kota stone, granite and Banswara marble), textures felt across fingertips (Knotted jute rugs and cane furniture) and the feeling of looking at art (from the fabric patchwork wall to the crafted doors). Varying materials and tones, but consistent in the chosen space fill up the space with wonder and warmth.

Between the bustle and bedlam of everyday, there is some calm and bits of eclectic. The home brings both in spades!
