Siddhartha Bansal dhan mill fashion store

The maximalist face of fashion retail

Are we talking enough about colours? Answers Siddhartha Bansal inside the label’s new store in New Delhi

While joy is usually the sentiment derived from a canvas of colours, over the years, I realise colours often are also markers of being adventurous and gallant. In the world of Siddhartha Bansal, the eponymous label that newly opened its flagship store in New Delhi’s en masse-favourite Dhan Mill, colours are a definite medium of storytelling.Β

In one glimpse, the 750 sq ft store stands still as a vanguard of maximalism and expressions. Gentle, edgy, spirited and crafts-forward, all at once. Conceptualised by the designer himself, the entryway itself materialises to depict itself as a beguiling art installation. The window displays reveal an almost life-sized Kamadhenu cow adorned in a whimsical palette, resounding the label’s emblematic style; a rotating five-foot mandala wheel and the label’s ensembles drenched in versatile patterns.

Step inside and one is engulfed in a sensorial gush of wonder β€” the walls imprinted with floral wallpapers, a paisley-shaped seater grounding the buzz around it, museum-esque trial rooms fringed with theatrical curtains, a mosaic heart engraved on the floor and a shelf of trinkets.

"I wanted this store to be an extension of my world, one that tells stories, elicits emotions, and celebrates the beauty of individualism" β€” Siddhartha Bansal

β€œOne of the most interesting elements is the motion-activated heart inside the trial room, which lights up when someone steps in and switches off when they step out, adding a playful surprise for those waiting outside,” tells the designer. While textiles, embroideries and crafts continue to root the space in an India-focused narrative, the design every now and then also borrows clues from the local vicinites, think the interplay of mirrors that mimic the quintessential barbershops in Old Delhi, creating an infinity illusion.

Inspired from his ancestral home in Old Delhi but carrying visual references of a modern retail sanctuary, the store is instilled in the idea of self-reflection, re-enacting that maximalism can be meditative too. As the designer says, β€œI believe the label Siddhartha Bansal is seen as a colorful and eclectic brand that celebrates individualism at its core. Our clothing is designed for the brave-hearted and the happy-spirited.”
