Dune to dwell

A sun-warmed Kozhikode home by Prekshaa Design Studio channels desert restraint and coastal ease

BY

As summer rolls in, the idea of resort-living like you’re always on vacation feels less like a trend and more like a necessary escape. While most of us can only scroll through holiday snaps and wistfully pine for a getaway, this home by Prekshaa Design Studio delivers that vacation spirit year-round. Bathed in sandy beiges, it’s a 1,150 sq ft space where the coastal Kozhikode breeze meets the stillness of the desert modernism of Palm Springs. Picture creamy floors underfoot that mimic the hues of a shoreline, raw wood surfaces like driftwood and earthy textiles. It is a feeling of home dressed in desert calm.

DINE AND DUNE

The open-plan kitchen is one of the most decadent parts of the space, quite literally. Textural, sun-warmed with the perfect balance of raw materiality. Doused in equal doses of chalky sands, baked clays and soft limestone, the dune-like palette is punctuated with inky black accents. The cabinetry sits flush against the walls, almost blending into them. The vertical panelling draws your attention upwards, elongating the space much like the desert palms in the afternoon heat. A kitchen island at the heart of the space catches and bounces back balmy sunlight, flooding through the windows.

The curated artefacts and ceramics add to the sunbaked still. Chairs line the counter in a casual rhythm that resembles a resort bar at golden hour. The dining follows suit in a more laid-back fervour, with a deep-hued table staged over a salt and pepper-streaked rug. Soft-edged chairs line its sides, while an inviting bench tucks neatly beneath, creating a sense of intimacy and ease. Above, a layered chandelier descends in stacked layers in a soft, creamy, coconut-hued fabric, adding a sculptural quality to the room.

PERSONAL TOUCHES

“The family visualised a minimalist yet personalised home, with ample storage and distinct spaces that align with their individual preferences,” shares Bilal Majeed, principal designer at Prekshaa Design Studio. Following their vision, the home unfolds in a minimalist spirit while staying true to personal expression. Think soft plastered walls offset by raw wood grains and sleek metal trims. “Designing the bedrooms was the most enjoyable part, as it allowed us to explore contrasting yet complementary design narratives that reflect the clients’ personalities”, Bilal adds. Tailored to the dweller’s taste, the first bedroom is awash in shades of grey with striking black undertones, while the second bedroom is doused in more with softer hues.
