Novelties arise: Perennials and Sutherland meet Vincent Van Duysen

As Fall 2025 prepares its onset, the three creatives align to adorn our living spaces with the innovative comfort of textiles and outdoor furniture

BY

An arbitrary search on the internet about Perennials and Sutherland reveals two merging realities of the present design world: the rising popularity of artisanal outdoor furniture and the enduring perfection of performance fabrics. What comes next is the two brands’ singular collaboration with Belgian designer Vincent Van Duysen, which leads to a creative adventure that favours the touch of textures, the genius of materials and the delicacy of living comfortably.

With its strength of quiet luxury echoing in every stitch and detail, the debut of Perennials and Sutherland by Vincent Van Duysen hints at a collection of outdoor furniture, wallcoverings and 100 per cent solution-dyed acrylic fabrics and rugs.

The wall vocabulary

Among the debuts and the experiments also lies the spotlight on walls. Vincent Van Duysen initiates a play between architecture and textures with his idea of eight styles of wallcoverings for Perennials. The inspiration? From weathered elegance of old-world concrete walls and irregular temperament of handmade paper to the horizontal stripes woven with raffia, hemp and cotton and printed design on vertical textile strings — an absolute tactile experience takes charge like a canvas one can almost visually touch. “This was my very first time exploring wallcoverings, so I approached it as an opportunity to translate both my architectural language and personal sensibility into something expansive and textural,” muses Van Duysen. As intriguing as its process are the names of the eight wallcoverings, dubbed Tableau, Grooves, Ashlar, Filament, Stitchery and Tierceron among others.

Tierceron: if you pay a closer look is a wood veneer wallcovering by Perennials, a naturally graceful extension of its wallcoverings range that celebrates the technique of hand-stained inlaid wood on each panel as an art. Steeped with a soft hum of natural grain, the coverings are available in four rich tones of Sea Salt, Putty, Butterscotch and Tobacco.

Rugs: The centre of gravity

Textiles then shapeshift as a gathering of four rugs in this collection, elevating the theory of structure and texture as well as modern and classic. Cue Waffle, a hand-tufted rug with a tonal checkerboard pattern that skillfully alternates between plush cut pile and loop. Have a visual memory of stacked bricks? Its patterns embed into Brickwork, a rug that narrates the appeal of architectural masonry through loop and pile. Come Lignes, the transitional beauty of hand-tufting takes centre stage. While Passer, a flat-woven rope rug, channels the linear pattern created by inlaying diverse rope sizes. Performance meets craftsmanship!

Fabrics and colours of the future

A trip back to Van Duysen’s hometown, Antwerp, comes alive as a micro-chenille ottoman weave, with a lens into delicate ribbing. The finely textured fabric shifts between tones like Sunset, Soapstone and Belgian Blue. For Fall 2025, two of Van Duysen’s fabrics from his 2021 collection — Heirloom and Flanders — get a colourway refresh too, featuring Soapstone and Ice Blue variants.

With first-time colourways like Slate and Chartreuse, Parquet’s small-scale herringbone quality performs a balance of texture and movement. And Brickwork, a linear chenille fabric with velvety softness, adds a curious dimension to upholstery available in six hues of Putty, Lavender and Ice Blue. Heard of Ardennes? Its thick, textured check pattern too debuts in seven colours like Celadon, Smoke, Denim and more. Waffle’s delicate chenille canvas surfaces in new tones of Pigeon, Lichen and Silver Birch.

Did you hear about Franck Aluminum?

Take a step outdoors and let the lighter, softer, modern but firmly anchored Franck Aluminum surround you with its reimagined avatar. Van Duysen’s original teak Sutherland Furniture rebirths with modern, innovative materials, a perfect contender for residential and hospitality spaces. Enveloped with powder-coated aluminum frames are the Franck Aluminum Dining Arm Chair, Lounge Chair, Three-seat Sofa and Dining Side Chair, while still retaining its original teak frames designs. The Franck Aluminum Adjustable Chaise maintains its original form but with a mesh sling, aluminum frame and a dual-movable back with an integrated side table.

Colours, patterns, curves and lines lead to an experiential universe of performance-forward textiles and furniture that crowns your outdoor expanses.

Perennials and Sutherland by Vincent Van Duysen is now available to interior designers and architects through showrooms worldwide.
