A greener side in Bharuch

With the courtyard leading every move, P&D Associates craft a Bharuch home around it

Sukoon is a nature-wrapped home in Bharuch, Gujarat with an intramural courtyard commanding the centre. As Devang Patel and Pratik Siddhpura of P&D Associates sum it up, “From every vantage point, nature remains central,” ensuring the feeling of calm is consistent yet never monotonous.

This 9,000 sq ft residence with its tiled roof and white facades acts almost like a narrative device, softening modern geometry with familiar texture. With deep overhangs and big glazed openings blurring inside and out, the whole place feels like a calm chessboard — same energy, different square, every time you move, a creative approach that the designers worked on alongside the team — Krina Modi, Meet Jain and Selina Patel

Opening move

The journey begins with a stone stairway and a wooden door opening into a welcoming foyer. A soft cream hued seat by the picture window invites guests to linger the moment they arrive, as a cluster globe chandelier overhead casts an artistic radiance across the entrance.

And just when you think the chess analogy is becoming overly obvious, the foyer floors showcase a black-and-white stone inlay, a tangible checkboard that grounds the surface below.

From here, the house splits into the living room and the family room — two areas that serve the same purpose yet differ in character. The living room embodies the essence of an art curator’s salon with urban photography and abstract canvases resting against warm beige walls, complemented by sculptural elements such as a bust and turned wooden finials.

The family area, meanwhile, feels like the living room’s more relaxed but equally stylish counterpart. The marble flooring persists, while full-height glass doors invite the lush greenery inside. A striking navy sofa, stacked wooden coffee tables and a classic grandfather clock combine to create an environment that harmonizes contemporary comfort and traditional elegance.

Quiet checkmate

The family room opens onto a dark-tiled path leading to “a serene temple pavilion within the landscape” complete with gentle water channels serving not only as a spiritual anchor but also as a spatial punctuation in the garden, explains principal designers Devang and Pratik. A stone sculpture of Nandi rests silently amidst the lush, and as the pathway progresses, the view finally widens to the expansive central courtyard with tropical foliage, a stone planter, and the two-storey home rising protectively around it.

“The sloped roof becomes a storytelling device: a nod to timelessness, memory, and emotional anchoring. It softens the home’s contemporary lines, lends a sense of classic familiarity, and balances the minimal white façades with its earthy textures,” says the duo.

The interiors transition into a dining area defined by matte-finish teal cabinetry and a sculptural flamingo relief on the tiled feature wall, serving as the room’s focal artwork, enhanced by a suspended white-and-gold chandelier. Indeed, what better evidence exists that even the most practical spaces can embody the drama of an art gallery?

From this point, the house expands into four additional rooms — a guest bedroom, the master suite, a children’s room, and the son’s bedroom. Tailored furniture and thoughtfully selected artworks provide each area with its unique character without veering into excess. All the bedrooms are positioned towards private garden alcoves, welcoming natural light and fresh air into everyday life.

Serene Play

The home’s material story closes on a note of quiet sophistication with earthy tones, tactile finishes and a seamless indoor–outdoor rhythm. Even the landscape plays its part, with the temple pavilion becoming a contemplative pause and the private gardens framing the bedrooms.

In the end, constraint becomes creativity, challenges became catalysts, and the courtyard, quite fittingly, became the home’s emotional centre of gravity.
