Framed in time, textiles and neutrals

In Mumbai, a home by NZ Architects weaves stories of natural textiles and calm colours

This home is more than materials and textures — it’s made of memories and emotions. In Mumbai’s Bandra, this 2,500 sq ft home was designed for a couple returning to India after many years abroad. Designed by Yash and Parth Jhawar of NZ Associates, the home exudes a sense of belonging for the homeowners; in the form of something layered, collected but not curated, the home had to feel deeply lived-in.

“We used wood extensively, its deep grain and rich texture providing warmth across furniture and custom joinery. Marble flooring lends quiet elegance, while natural textiles create tactile balance,” — Yash and Parth Jhawar

Stories and retreats within

The home comprises a living and dining room, three bedrooms, five bathrooms, a den and a kitchen, each with its own identity but a continuous sense of collectedness. Whether it’s the colours used or artwork that adorns the walls, these choices consciously tell stories and exhibit comfort while invoking nostalgia and retaining sophistication. The den acts as a retreat within the home, including a sleek bar cabinet and plush seating that has moodier lighting which enchants the warm hues and cocoon-like vibe. “The den was a labor of love, it allowed us to be more emotive, blending form and function with storytelling” explain Yash and Parth.

Materials made of memories

To maintain that sense of calm in the home, an earthy, neutral palette; think, warm beiges, soft browns and muted greens encompass you as you enter the living room. To break the monotony, subtle blues are sporadically found across the space, inspired by natural landscapes. “From the first walkthrough, we envisioned a space that told their story through materials, memories, and moments, each corner a chapter of where they’ve been and what they cherish,” say Yash and Parth Jhawar

The extensive use of wood provides the warmth and comfort the home seeks, pairing well with the marble flooring that exudes quiet sophistication. Linen, jute and cotton are some of the natural textiles that accompany this mix, chosen considering the way they will age and bring character to the home. A sleek pendant light occupies the limelight of the dining area, a dramatic entity perfectly paired with minimalist modern dining chairs and a simple table. The restful palette continues into the bedroom – muted walls, soft oak elements and cane-fronted wardrobes and an upholstered headboard, that create layers of textures, yet not overwhelming the space. The artisanal powder room of the home stands out with dark-toned surfaces, stone textures and fine brass accents, complete with a minimalist mirror. Despite a simple brief, the home feels familiar and collected, a space that is welcoming and refined.
