When designers Saahil Parikh and Nupur Shah of We Design Studio were tasked with transforming the bare-shell of a Mumbai skyrise home into a sanctuary of contemporary minimalism, they decided to take on the challenge head-on. For what’s not to love about a space that throws open a gamut of (design) possibilities in a city as magical as the Maximum City?
Awash in earthy and sombre tones, this airy and amply lit 2,100 sq ft apartment, named the East Coast Residence in South-Central Mumbai embodies a sense of comfort with its ascetic design sensibilities. A mood that gently nudges you to press pause and be present. “The overarching theme of this residence is one of simplicity and timeless elegance. The design aims to create a serene and sustainability-forward space that reflects a deep connection with natural materials and principles of minimalism,” expresses Saahil Parikh, Principal Architect and Founder of We Design Studio.
Essentialism of a rustic charm
Inspired by the homeowners’ common love for simplicity and spaces that harbour feelings of ease and restfulness; functionality and flow pervade through the interiors. Be it the lobby where natural light is abound, or the two bedrooms rooted in minimalist design, the overall aesthetic reflects a connection with natural materials.
Inclusions like the use of recycled materials, locally sourced elements like wooden-tiled floors, recycled Burma teak wood, exotic granite and the integration of essential storage solutions help maintain a minimalist aesthetic. Pops of creative elements break the monotony of the space—there are moments of subtle experimentation, particularly with the art and accessories that introduce colours and textures.
Soulful spaces, mindful moves
Much like most homes, the East Coast residence features a highlight area which, energetically and aesthetically, is easily the star. “This central space allowed for the incorporation of natural light and thoughtful material choices that align with the overall minimalist and sustainable theme. Creating a space that balances openness with cosiness was deeply fulfilling,” Nupur recalls.
A lesson in clutter-free designs
“The space breaks away from traditional notions of luxury, which often involve opulence and excess, and instead leans into a design that emphasises functionality, warmth, and environmental consciousness,” says Saahil. With spatial utilisation at its core, strategic moves were made and every nook is carefully crafted to foster seamless integration of storage solutions that maintain a minimalist timelessness. “The most challenging aspect was integrating ample storage without compromising the openness and simplicity of the layout,” Saahil addresses, further adding that the design team addressed this by tucking wardrobes and storage units into alcoves and niches, ensuring they blended seamlessly into the design.
Buying into the trend of how less is more indeed; this Mumbai haven soaks into design choices where the spotlight shines brightly on essentialism. Inviting yet refined, expansive yet grounding and intimate. “A careful balance of colour and material enhances the sense of calm and cohesion throughout the space,” sums up Nupur.
