The Making of the MCI Experience Centre

The only one of its kind in India, the Marble Centre International Experience Centre reflects a commitment to craft beyond the ordinary stroke of genius

BY

This is the story of how this ode to stone and marvel of design took shape through a partnership between the Ladha family of Marble Centre International and Wong Chiu Man of WOW Architects, which evolved through a series of projects. As expectations from luxury retail evolved, redefining how people engage, interact, and purchase, the Ladhas of MCI envisioned a customer journey far more elevated than that of conventional stone stockyards and showrooms. A space that reflected the nature of the product and an experience that understood the value of the time spent by customers or visitors. In MCI, Ar. Wong Chiu Man saw MCI as more than just another stone company; he saw a company with an international spirit and vision, based in India. And the bond between WoW and MCI grew from a shared passion for beauty, craft, and creating meaningful experiences. The idea was to use the highest-quality materials to create a sense of luxury that enhances the exceptional value of time, whether one’s own or that of loved ones, clients, or guests.

After all, every experience, every moment, every breath counts. At its core, it was about offering an emotional experience in stone. The space was designed as an experience in itself, showcasing the functionality, versatility, and endless possibilities with natural stone through curated lifestyle settings that feel natural and real. It was imagined to appeal to the creator, the designer, the artist in all of us, and to evoke emotions that transcend the transactional and make choices meaningful. It is envisioned as a dynamic, living space where designers from around the world gather to conduct research, engage in dialogue, host exhibitions, and participate in workshops.

Designing a living experience in stone

The beauty of the MCI Experience Centre lies in its spatial sequence, which is majestically designed to unfold naturally. The three-dimensional quality of stone is explored and demonstrated throughout the space, with strategic cutouts that bring in natural light and reveal its sculptural spirit. Visitors can experience the three-dimensional nature of this material in its full form, showing how stone can be curated, manufactured and used creatively. Moving from the central atrium past striking elements such as the ebony and onyx doors, they are drawn into curated spaces that immerse them in the depth, texture, and richness of the materials. To best showcase how natural stone integrates into everyday living spaces, specific ultra-luxury lifestyle zones were created, including a living room, lounge, bar and dining area. These spaces show that the focus of the space was not simply to showcase stone, but to present stone in combination with fine fabrics, bespoke furniture, and curated artefacts, for a central sensory engagement with materials. These experiences are designed to inspire designers to think beyond the ordinary and explore the limitless ways natural stone can be woven into every corner of contemporary décor and design.

Designing with intent

Equally important to Wong Chiu Man was creating a calm, inspiring atmosphere that remains harmoniously connected to its surroundings. The abundant greenery characteristic of Bengaluru, together with natural light, expansive outdoor views, water, and other sensory elements, was carefully orchestrated to foster serenity. The city’s pleasant climate and lush landscape provide a natural backdrop that enhances this effect. Stone, being an incredibly versatile material, can be experienced in countless ways. Its ability to evoke a deep emotional response is the hallmark of truly exceptional design. By understanding the finish, using light effectively, and placing stone in the right context, even the most humble material can create something truly exceptional. This intention was central to the Experience Centre, showing that, regardless of budget, designers can create meaningful emotional responses through thoughtful design in stone.
